saving email and picture

Feb 25, 2011 9:46PM PST

I have no trouble saving an attachment but when I try to save an email from MS Outlook with the picture included (to a flash drive) I only finish up with the text and a blank square, including a red x when I open it on the drive
DELL Inspiron 518.Vista
Help needed. Thanks

Mails and pictures are a minefield, more or less, with different unspecified behaviour in different email-clients. But this is a little bit strange. So please tell more. To start with:
1. What version of Outlook?
2. In format do you save the mail? Should be .eml
3. Does it make a difference if you save it on the hard disk or on flash drive?
4. Does it make a difference if you open the .eml from the flash drive on this same PC or on another PC?
5. Size of e-mail (in bytes, or MB) shown in Outlook and from Explorer when saved.

When saved the file shows an Internet Explorer orb (E)
On another computer the file brought up "Internet Explorer has restricted this web page from running scripts or active x controls that could access your computer
Sorry about Q2 but my computer knowledge is limited.

Sorry, I lost track of this thread. But I see you're still answering another poster, so maybe you'll read this.

Obviously, if the file is so small, it doesn't contain the picture. It seems you saved it as html, which isn't the best way.

I don't have Outlook 2003 here, so I'm asking you to do some research.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/save-a-message-HP005242805.aspx tells how to save a message as a file. Point 5 says to choose the filetype you want. Try all filetypes and see which one works. I suppose it's something like or "message". If in doubt or overwhelmed, please post the full list here.

File types show as

Text only (*.htm)
Outlook Template (*.oft)
Outlook Message Format (*.msg)
HTML (*. *.html)

By selecting Outlook Message Format it saves with the picture included. Problem solved!

Thanks to Kees and all
