Saved SPORE patches to desktop but no clue how to install th

Jul 14, 2010 3:05AM PDT

I am using Windows 7 64-bit and I have been trying to install patches for a pucker, paid for version of SPORE TM - albeit two years old now. To cut a long story short, I have had troubles with updates or "patches" and EA recommended to download the necessary patches from FileShack until they sort out the problem. This I have done but I was not given the option to "run" when I downloaded so I "saved" to my desktop. Now I don't know how to "install" them. Can you help? I tried to "open" them on the desktop but was simply asked what programme to open it with. No idea.

Awaiting your assistance.

Thanks for your help with Spore patch installation

Many thanks for getting back to me. I had previously tried the double-click option but nothing happened at that time. However, I followed somebody's advice and simply renamed them by adding the .exe extension and they did try to install.
Thanks again. Much appreciated.

I can't explain it but will guess.

A common workaround to .exe download problems is to rename the .exe to some other name or in this case "no extension" and then instruct the user to add it later. Not to write at length but it appears that what someone did but the instructions were lost somewhere.

Thanks for the final report.

What's the filetype?

Set the folder options to NOT hide it. Then it's the part behind the last dot in the filename. Something like .exe, .doc, .pdf.

Spore patch installation

Many thanks for getting back to me. I followed your advice but the file extensions would not show on those particular files for some reason. They showed on all the others e.g. pdf, doc, etc. - but not those. So I simply renamed them by adding the .exe extension and they did try to install. So your advice worked.

Unfortunately, I had meanwhile managed to download AND INSTALL patch #5 "in-game" so, whilst attempting to install the earlier patches I received the message notifying me of that fact and telling me that I had to remove patch #5 before I can install those two earlier patches.

I have no idea if patch #5 includes all earlier patches - or if I really do need to start over. Trouble is, I wouldn't know how to remove patch #5 anyway - without uninstalling the whole game and starting over from scratch. Oooooh noooo !! I'll stick with it for now.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.
