Dave, I was first introduced to this expression about 1970 when in the USAF. At that time, many of the young enlisted were not there solely out of a sense of duty and some of us who thought we were clever would use such expressions for doing what we called "torquing the lifers". I hadn't the knowledge then to know where the expression originated or what it really meant other than some sort of freudian humor. It can still get a chuckle in a non-sinister sort of way. One thing I have gained though over the years is a deeper respect for those "lifers" which we would mock at that time, however. There are a few very good, dedicated and professional folks who serve our country and these are left to parry such subtle insults while protecting our way of life. God bless them. My two cents....

IIRC, the one Dave originally linked to had a character (Cheney) being introduced to a character labeled 'Reality' with a tag line something like "I don't think you've ever met before"
