My experience is that the DVD connector inside a laptop is pretty-much a universal size, but they are not actually the same as a SATA connector for a hard drive. The DVD drive, shen slipped into the laptop, just plugs into this connector.
There is an inexpensive "Caddy" available which will hold a 2.5" hard drive and then slip into the DVD spot in a laptop in place of the actual DVD drive once it has been removed.
For example, refer to this eBay link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/9-5mm-Universal-Caddy-SATA-2nd-HDD-SSD-Hard-Drive-CD-DVD-ROM-Optical-Bay-adapter/311580410211?hash=item488ba3c163:g:rP8AAOSwI3RW~Uut
Also, my experience is that there are at least two sizes (i.e. thicknesses) of such caddies, so be sure you get the one that's spec'd for your laptop.
Hi
I have just opened up my wife' laptop to put in a new SSD. I want to take the DVD drive out and put the old hard drive in it's place. The problem is the sata connection on the DVD drive is smaller than the hard drive one. The power ports are both the same size.
I've never actually seen that before, I was just wondering if there is a cable I need to allow the larger sized plug in the hard drive to plug into the smaller socket on the motherboard?
