sata hard drive not recognized

I had to install a new hard drive and os... Did windows xp...no problem. But my other hard drive is not accessible. It shows up in device manager but no assigned drive letter. If I right click on that drive...listed as drive 1 dynamic with the yellow asterisk.... and format it.....# 1 will it erase all the data I have on it and #2 will it then make it accesible? I am also wondering if maybe the problem is actually in the bios??
