Samsung YP-Z5 latest firmware online?!

Apr 17, 2006 12:17AM PDT

I have sent an email to Samsung UK asking that album art can be read by using 'advanced tag editor' in WMP10 for the next firmware, but then I realised their UK site doesn't even have a firmware download.
Checking the US site, I find there is one available, but it is only version 1.01. I have a UK device, with firmware version 1.06 already on it- but so far I haven't been able to find this available online anywhere. Where are we supposed to get the latest firware updates from?
I would like to email the US site with the same request, but can't access the email on that site, the email link doesn't seem to work (don't know if this is due to me being in the UK).
I have already checked samsunghq.com too, to no avail. Any idea's people? We need to get on to Samsung to make this album art easier!

Album art is the least of my worries
Apr 17, 2006 6:53AM PDT

I had no problem at all with album art on my YP-Z5. All the music files that I had in WMP 10 automatically transferred art to the Samsung along with the files, and all the little color pictures show just fine whenever a song played. However, I'm taking the player back because I think their claimed battery life is a joke. Supposed to be 35 hours and I'm lucky to get 10, and yes I know what I'm doing in the charging and testing of it. Have you tested yours? The way the pros do it is to fully charge it, then put it on continuous play and let it run (with the display dark) and see how long it goes until it stops. Mine will only go 10-12 hours and it's completely dead.

Very Odd...

I have not done the tesr you describe but were I to guess I would say somewhere between 27 to 29 hours.
Definately over 20, easily.
I charged it and listened to it for about 8 hours yesterday and the meter still reads full. Hasn't budged.
I would say you got a lemon but this is the 2nd player you have had that has done this, correct?
Extremely odd.

couple of thoughts....
Apr 17, 2006 7:47AM PDT

I have 2 computers: A newer Dell Dimension and an older Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop.
The Dimension has the newer USB 2.0 while the Inspiron has the older USB (1.1 I believe).
The Z5 doesn't like the older USB. Very slow and locks up and seems to charge MUCH slower. Works fine with the USB 2.0 on the Dimension, however. If you have the older USB you may be getting a weak charge even though it says fully charged it may not be as strong.

This seems very unlikely but does it matter what format the songs are? The vast majority of songs on my Z5 are in WMA rather than mp3 format. I don't see why this would matter, but maybe it does.

driving me nutz

I REALLY wanted this player to do the job for me, that's why I took the first one back and got another. I've tried everything...have charged it on different USB ports on 2 different computers (both recent models and USB 2.0), tried charging longer than suggested, in short everything I can think of. Music files are medium quality (96) WMA files, am running the player without the DNSe EQ, and the only time the display is on is for 15 seconds at the beginning. Still poops out after 10-12 hours. The only thing I can think of is that Best Buy was the first major chain to offer the player, and maybe Samsung had to rush to fulfill the contact...meaning a lot of lemons got thru? Far-fetched, but???

BTW - keep an eye on yours. The battery gauge on mine showed full for the first 8 hours but then rapidly dropped after that.

update....
Apr 18, 2006 12:26AM PDT

I listened to my Z5 for another 5 hrs bringing the total to 13 hrs. The battery display says half full.
Note that this is with alot of pausing and stopping/restarting so the display was on for much of the time.

Excuse me!!
Apr 18, 2006 3:14AM PDT

Excuse me people, but why have we strayed from the topic here? My initial post is regarding where we should request updates for firmware, like easier album art association, and where on the web is best to get the latest firmware from- the UK Samsung site doesn't have firmware, and the US site has an old firmware.
If you want to start moaning about a completely different problem, then start a new topic!
Blimey, I saw there were 5 replies and thought I may have had a result, until I read all your comments and found it was absolutely nothing to do with my initial post.

Whoops!

Sorry - you're right, of course. However, that's how forums tend to do sometimes.

Anyhow, back to my original answer to your original post - I've had no problem at all getting album art to show up on the Z5, so I don't think your problem is a design flaw. I use WMP10 to transfer the music - tagged WMA files - and the art automatically goes along. There's another thread on this forum that goes into quite a bit of detail about showing album art on the player - maybe it would give you some ideas about how to get yours working.

In my case, I'm taking the player back for a refund because of battery issues...

to clarify
Apr 18, 2006 4:10AM PDT

Thanks for your apology.
To clarify, the majority of my album art was not a problem either, but more often just lately I buy music only to find when I 'find album info' in WMP10, it finds the album info, but not album art. This is mainly due to the cd's are the UK editions, and for some reason the UK versions in the info tend to not have album art. What I have to do then is search for another edition of the cd and use that instead just to get the art. This means that sometimes I have to do a bit of swapping around with the tracks as sometimes they are in a different order etc. Once or twice I have even had to search for an album that is completely different just to get album art assigned, then change the tags and album art pictures to the correct ones manually. It will be a lot easier sometimes if I could just add album art using the advanced tag editor in WMP10. But the Samsung player doesn't recognise this.
Like I said, 9 times out of 10 I have found album art, but three of my albums so far have had to 'cheat' to get album art associated with them, and I have already searched for a new album I am buying- yet again, no album art as it is UK only!! Getting a little annoyed with it now.
