samsung yp-mt6: mp3 file size limit?

Mar 25, 2005 3:22PM PST

I've just bought a Samsung yp-mt6 and was very impressed with it until I ran into this problem: I record mostly classical music, and the first of several movements of one piece in mp3 format is slightly over 9mb in size. Whenever I try to get the player to play that track, it shuts down automatically and restarts. Another track of 6mb, however, will play. So I wonder if anyone has run into this problem, knows the cause, and possibly a solution?

Thanks!

I bought one last week and had similar problems. My mp3 files are greater than 12MB. When playing these files, my YP-MT6 would reset any time I tried to switch to a different file or even if I tried to turn it off (had to pull the battery out). It did the same thing with equally large wma files.

Here's the fix: return for refund. I did that today.

More to the story...

THanks for the reply. I've found since I posted the 1st message that I was able to play the file after changing the file name and moving it to a different position in the play list. So now I'm not sure exactly where the problem lies. I'm doing a little more testing before returning.

Good luck.

The bigger the file, the badder the reset?

I was able to get it working for short periods of time by deleting the large files via USB and then reloading them. Sometimes it would hold up for a day but would eventually fall back to the resetting problem. I also tried converting the mp3s to wma and ogg, but it didn't make any difference. My files were larger (at least 15MB) than you mentioned yours were, so it might get worse with file size. Smaller mp3s that I ripped from CD always worked OK.
I really hated to return it because it sounded great and it was so easy to use. I ordered an iAudio G3 today.

good luck

Hope the iAudio is good for you. Let me know what you think of it (in case I need to return my samsung too).

cheers

iAudio G3

Had it for 2 days and so far, no problems. It sounds great (although I'm using headphones, not the included buds), navigates much like the Samsung, and does everything I've asked of it. It also claims 40 hours on a AA battery. Really nice display, buttons, and thumbstick. I can't say I'm impressed with the case. It's OK, but looks a little too plastic for my taste.
It came with some excellent ripping/conversion/download software (JetShell).
Everybody's generally happy with something new. I'm just happy it's handling huge mp3s.

Hey guys,
Any update on the file size problem?
Does it occur frequently or rarely?
How is the sound quality? does this product look durable? Please let me know.

same problem
Apr 24, 2005 9:35PM PDT

i've been having a similar problem, only involving ogg files of normal size (3-6mb). the player will play the files just fine, but when i try to navigate the player, it seems as though when it tries to scroll the song name while in the navigation mode, it resets. any clue?

Update
Apr 27, 2005 6:41AM PDT

I've stayed with the Samsung, and haven't experienced any problems since the large file problem issue I first asked about, which as I said, seemed to go away when I renamed the track--but honestly I don't know exactly why that fixed it. The original file name was EXTREMELY long, and perhaps some combination of very long file names and file size causes a problem. In any case, I'm still using it and I'm happy with it (I can't say I've even tested all its features yet.)

Works fine!

After thinking a lot and comparing other devices, I finally bought a Samsung YP-MT6Z and I am glad I bought it. I did not encounter any reset problems as reported by some people. The firmware version is the default 1.111 which came with the player. I have been using it to play mp3 files in the range of 5MB to 14MB.

There is one thing which I would like to point out. The player comes with a default Power-off setting of 5 secs, which means the player shuts down automatically after 5 seconds of inactivity. Having read about player getting reset in these forums, I also thought that Im facing the same problem but later discovered that its a setting in Settings->Time->Power off. Not sure whether this is what other people misunderstood.

Btw, the player is really amazing. I tried all its features & all seem to work very nicely. I have used a Iriver IFP-390T & Samsung MT6z sounds almost same, if not better than the IRiver. Sound settings like SRS WoW are too gud.Also, I found the navigation & user friendliness better in Samsung than the IRiver.The earphones are not that good though, the sound really great when I use IRiver's or some other earphone.
But overall, Im just luving this device!

bought it in europe (maybe a difference)

yesterday a put a hard test on it
played without troubles every mp3 i throw into it
like:
The Doors - The End @ 256kb -> 12MB
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida @ 256 -> 32MB
and finally
i put a complete overlong CD (82 min) into a single file
@360kbit - works fine!

so no problem here
