Below you'll find the settings I found best for viewing the Samsung UN65F9000 in a dim room via the HDMI input. Your settings may vary depending on source, room conditions, and personal preference. Check out the Picture settings and calibration FAQ for more information.

Calibration notes: As usual Samsung's Movie setting delivered the best picture quality compared to the other presets. Not surprisingly, it was basically as accurate as the F8000 series, with average error levels for color and grayscale pretty close to the nominal level of human perception (d2000 of 3 or less).

Of course I wanted to get it closer and Samsung's excellent controls again made that a relative cinch. First I had to decide which local dimming setting to use, which wasn't easy since the differences between the three were just as subtle as on the F8000. This time around I chose High because it delivered the flattest, most concistent gamma while maintaining the deepest black levels. Honestly though, all three showed very good gamma and shadow detail. Of course I recommend avoiding Off since it showed significantly worse black levels than any of the others, as well as worse uniformity (albeit not as bad as on the F8000) since the brighter backlight exposed some hot spots.

Dialing in gamma, grayscale and color was a breeze due to Movie's initial accuracy and the superb controls. The 2-point system got the grayscale to a level I'd be perfectly satisfied with normally, while the 10-point system worked well to further hone it to near perfection. The same went for color, where the 3D CMS worked beautifully. In the end the F9000 showed some of the most accurate color of the year according to my charts.

LED Clear motion didn't show any visible difference in blur between Off and On. I decided to turn it off because On reduced light output slightly--although not nearly as much as on past Samsung TVs.

Great review

Thanks for the great review and excellent starting point on the calibration settings. Just got the set and likely will tweak further to match our particular preferences, but really a great initial setting suite! Overall review was very thorough and convinced us to go with this model, confident that we had the detailed info we needed to differentiate between all the alternatives.
