Samsung UN55H6350 Optical Out doesn't work with apps

Dec 28, 2014 7:21AM PST

Hi

I recently purchased a UN55H6350. The only audio out it has apparently is optical, which I'm running to my receiver. It works fine with TV broadcasts, or inputs from HDMI sources. Does not output anything for apps (Netflix and HBOGO are the two I've tried). Am I missing something?

Diving into the apps to find audio settings in the apps. Due to what reasons is anyone's guess, the apps don't have to use the TV's settings.

Wow - as a software engineer, I can say that's a horrible design.

For the anyone else in the future w/ the issue:
-Press Tools on the remote.
In the tools menu, choose Speaker Select and then choose Audio Out.

Without this, in any other mode, optical out "just works" with the TV's speakers as well. For the apps, you need to choose one. Kind of annoying.

Also worth noting, I paused a video on Netflix, and started it again only to find it muted. This is going to be fun.
