Samsung UN55B8000 White light problem

Jul 6, 2009 5:13PM PDT

I just bought my tv yesterday and when i connect to watch a movie i saw a ugly white light from the corners to the center of the tv.

The light is present always during a slide photo show, watching tv, bluray movies.

I previous owned a Saharp LC46d64u and never i saw this issue.

Can anybody post if you have the same problem with the Samsung Led Tv.

Thanks.

The LED TVs do get some white light coming from the corners.. it's a 'feature' of the set from what I've read online. I can see it on my UE46B8000 but it's not that noticeable or distracting.

What is noticeable & distracting on mine are the dimmer areas/cones at the top and bottom of the screen which appear on mostly lightly coloured scenes (like the sky).

mattc_uk,

I'd disagree that a screen uniformity issue was a "feature". If it's an issue that persists for either poster in this topic, I would definitely recommend contacting Samsung to have the issue inspected.

Screen uniformity issues are inherent on LCD panels, but shouldn't be an issue while viewing content on the screen. If it is, it should be addressed with a service tech.

Keep me posted.

Sounds good to me; will they come to my house to take a look? I'd be happy for a technician to take a look.. it's easy to see. How do I start to raise this?

mattc_uk,

Assuming from your handle that you're from the UK, the customer support number would be 0845-SAMSUNG.

Keep me posted!

nelsondevicenci,

I can't explain the dents. That would have to be dealt with from where you purchased it from.

As for the settings changing, it sounds like your television is in Shop Mode.

To remove your TV from Shop mode, follow these steps:

1. On the bezel itself (not the remote) push the MENU button down for about 12 seconds. You should see "Dynamic" appear.

2. If that doesn't work, you may need to briefly push the volume button up first, release it, and immediately push down the MENU button for about 12 seconds.

After that, you should be able to adjust your settings so that they stay.

Keep me posted.

I returned the tv, but i see in many stores and the 5 tvs 558000 has the same issue dark corners, white lime at the left side.

I saw on best buy advertising in a Samsung models display the samsung 8500 can you explain about this model?

nelsondevicenci,

The 8500 will be in select retailers, including "Magnolia" Best Buy stores, and will have LED backlighting rather than the Edge-Lighting of the 8000-and-below models.

I don't have finalized specs, but it's a white LED backlighting (rather than an inefficient RGB combination backlighting which we don't do) that will have local dimming and the Media 2.0 suite of internet widgets.

Ok you said that the led RGB technology is not used for Samsung because is cheap, What about the led BACKLIGHT is the worse ever and i think more cheaper than the RGB.

In that statement why Samsung release the Series 6000,7000 and 8000 i saw in detail in many stores and has a common problem Dark Corners, too bright and distorted backlight, not uniform image.

You know the price for the 8500 and 9000 series or when is available at stores.

Thanks for the prompt response.

nelsondevicenci,

I didn't say RGB was cheap, I said it was less efficient.

I think you may have mistaken backlit LED with 6/7/800 Series Edgelit LED. Some people prefer one technology over the other. That's why we make several.

I don't have prices. The retailers set those individually, and I don't have suggested retail prices for those units.

Dark cone issue (rather than white light) - update
Jul 27, 2009 10:56PM PDT

Hi Mr Samsung.. you asked me to update you with the issue I was seeing. Mine wasn't the white light problem; I don't really find that annoying. Mine was dark coning at the top+bottom of the screen.. which were appearing on light scenes, and were especially noticeable on horizontal panning.

I contacted Samsung via the support line and a local partner company is coming out to fit a new panel (after coming to the house and confirming it's an issue).

Thanks for the update. Keep me posted on new developments. I don't know how Samsung UK handles these issues, so I'd be interested to hear their response.

Replacement panel
Aug 9, 2009 10:00PM PDT

Hi Mr Samsung; the repair guys came this morning and replaced the panel, however it hasn't solved the issue (according to the wife, because I'm at work). We used a test MP4 file which I created to allow us to have an all-white screen, followed by various shades of grey. So I'm still seeing coning around the top and bottom of the screen; see this post for an idea of how it looks:

http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-televisions/956338-samsung-ue46b8000-47.html#post9899948

Other people on that forum are experiencing the same issue. One guy has his with a repair place and expects it back soon. Another got an exchange back at the shop and still gets the problem.. if not a bit worse he says.

I'll have to take this up with the repair partner, then probably with Samsung customer support.

Not quite sure what we can do to resolve this if a complete panel replacement doesn't solve it. Any ideas?

mattc_uk,

I'm sorry to hear it didn't work out.

Instead of the tests, how does it look with regular programming? Does it look any better? There is some adjustments that can be done with the some settings, but screen uniformity is inherent with any LCD panel.

I'm not sure what resolutions are available in your region. I encourage you to do what makes you happiest be it a repair, exchange, etc.
