Samsung UN48JU6400 - BD Syncing Issues

Mar 1, 2016 6:53AM PST

Has anyone had any issues with UHD TVs - specifically the Samsung type above - not syncing properly with BD? In particular, I have noticed bad syncing on several musicals, such as the West Side Story 50th Anniversary Edition. I have watched this before on other HDTVs and never noticed bad syncing. It was out of sync (and continued to fall further out of sync) only during songs, primarily the Jets songs like Cool Boy and the Jet Song, as well as Tonight.

So here's some additional info about my rig, and as I work at odd hours and cannot call Samsung Customer Service directly, I hope there is someone here who can help me out.

I have a Samsung TV as mentioned above. The BD player is an all-in-one combo, a Sony BDV-E3100. I have that connected by HDMI to the TV, so the picture is going by HDMI, and the sound is running directly off the receiver/BD.

Here's where it gets a little funny. When I have the picture set to Movie with my own personal settings, that's when I have the lip sync issue. And it's not consistent. It's not every song in West Side Story, it's not every voice in every movie I see. It seems to be primarily male voices that get the most out sync - such as the character of Skinner is often out of sync on my X-Files Blu-Rays.

I have tried cutting out the sound from the receiver, so I get both picture and sound running to TV from HDMI - syncs fine.

If I set it to Game Mode, the sync issues go away as well, but I don't like the way the TV looks in Game Mode, even with all the settings matched up to my previous specs. Is there anyone who has any knowledge of this Sony rig and how to make it line up with the TV? I never had this problem with an HDTV, only with this new UHD.

Yes, I've seen such.

This is a clear product issue and you need to get back to the makers for a fix. If they don't fix then you have a reason to return the products. Keep it simple. Ask for a fix, if none, the product is not ready for the market.

Is the Issue with the BD/Receiver or the TV?
Mar 1, 2016 7:38AM PST

Just curious which I should replace/return? I've had the BD/Receiver for quite some time, and it wouldn't put me out to get a new one. Or should I be returning the TV?

My read is it's the BD player.

Since the TV just shows what it's being sent and can't build up a longer and longer lag the symptom has me pointing at the player. Try another BD player.

-> Again, the lag on the TV would be a set number of frames. The fact it continues to get worse points us to the player.

I have to broach the subject of pirate videos here. One client was adamant the design/model was broke but not one of the titles would show the issue. Finally they confessed it was on home made content or stuff from the internet. What a mess that is.

Not Pirating
Mar 1, 2016 7:56AM PST

I'm not pirating, my issues are with manufacture-approved BDs the ones referenced here are the 50th Anniversary Fox-produced West Side Story set, and the X-Files are legitimate Blu-Rays, both purchased in store or on Amazon.com

Many of the 'All in One' rigs lack audio delay
Mar 1, 2016 8:00AM PST

This is why you might want to look into upgrading to a standard (separate) AV receiver which provides some audio delay settings. YMMV.

Hope you see why it may be the player here.

I forgot to note that any audio processing can cause pains like that. Just like what you noted with game mode, audio processing in receivers can create an odd lip sync issue.

Game Mode Actually Helps
Mar 1, 2016 8:16AM PST

Actually, in this instance, the lip sync is fine when it's in Game Mode, it's when I have it on Movie/Cinema mode with my own personal settings to adjust the picture that the lip sync issue occurs.

There are two issues you raised.
Mar 1, 2016 9:42AM PST

1. Lip sync. That one needs a delay adjust in the player or TV. Some do, some don't.

2. The one that it gets further and further out of sync as time passes is a player bug. I've never found it to be a TV issue.

Shopping for New BD/Receiver Tonight

Thanks, I'm going to do a little shopping tonight, I guess...

Thanks for the Advice, R. Proffitt...

I got a Samsung 5.1 BD/Receiver system 1000w (more than my Sony which weighed in at 300 or 500w) and WOW the difference is amazing. I have sync delay (which I had to play around with a bit to get the Jet Song from West Side Story to sync up - but it finally did), this one has tone control in addition to separate level controls (the Sony only had individual level control - no equalizer).

So glad I replaced the sound system and not the TV (which I'm loving even more now that everything finally looks right). Thanks for your advice, man.

And thank you for the report.

Nice to read you sorted it out. Here's a final parting tip. If it's working, ignore firmware updates without good reason. Samsung's firmware update is one way so if the receiver is working as you wish, don't update it as you can't go back.
