Question

Samsung TV to Yamaha Receiver hookup issues

May 3, 2017 3:49PM PDT

Details:
TV- Samsung UN39EH5003F
Receiver- Yamaha RX-V377
Blu Ray- Sony BDP-S3500
Cable Box- Cable One...(HDMI out, AV out, TV out)
Odd situation...I have the TV and Blu Ray run to the receiver with HDMI cables. When I play anything on the Blu Ray (DVDs, Netflix, etc) the surround-sound speakers play it just fine. However...
When I play a standard TV channel the sound goes only through the TV speakers. I've tried every set-up in the TV menu to no avail.
I've run the cable wire from the wall to the cable box and then to the TV via standard coax cables. No other cables run out of the cable box. From the TV, I've run an HDMI to the receiver port #1 per the instructions. From the Blu Ray I've run an HDMI to the Receiver port #2.
So...any ideas how to get the TV to play sound through the surround sound? The TV only has the following ports:
2 HDMI-IN, Component AVI-IN (Green-Red-Blue 3.5mm) and Audio L/R (Red-White 3.5mm).
The receiver has tons of other ports available.
Thanks in advance.

Is there a TV channel issue or

Is the sound missing when you use Cable TV?

In one line you write the Cable One Box has HDMI then you write COAX? I'm a little lost on that.

OK, in a receiver setup all sources go to the receiver first. Then one final HDMI up to the TV.

If the TV does take in content via Antenna, then it's customary to run an optical from TV to the receiver for the last audio back link.

1. Using cable TV, the sound only comes from the TV speakers...not the surround sound via the receiver.
2. The coax goes from the wall to the cable box- then from the cable box to the TV. The HDMI cable goes from the TV to the receiver.
3. The TV does not have an optical port, just 2 HDMI-In, Component- In, Audio- L/R.

That's quite the odd setup. Usually the HDMI from cable box is used. Something is way off here.

In short, use the HDMI out of the cable box to the receiver.
