Question

samsung tv and externall hdd

Nov 26, 2017 3:44AM PST

hi,
i have a samsung 50ku6072 which i think is the same as 6300 in some countries. i m trying to buy an external hdd 2tb and dont know which to buy so my tv will recognise it. it works with my 128gb usb and its supossed to work with hdd as well but i guess my question is will it work with a hdd that needs to install on my laptop to work. i dont know how this technology works but it would make sense that if it needs to install for it to work on windows it wouldnt work on tv because it cant install to a tv, or maybe it doesnt need to install because tv only reads it and doesnt write on it i dont know really, i m a bit confused Happy  for ex. maxtor m3 (which is if understand corectly basically samsung and so has better chances of being recognised by my tv) has to install and the seagate doesnt but its more expensive and i dont know if the tv will even recognise it..
sorry if the question is confusing and thanks for help.

Samsung has yet to publish a list of compatible drives.

If the TV is say 2017 or later I expect the 2TB drive to be fine. But here's the second half. As you know not all video files play on smart TVs. Why is well done so I stop here.

yeah the tv is 2016 model and i m pretty sure it supports hdd but when i asked samsung support they just told me to buy samsung hdd cuz its more likely it will support it, ofc trying to sell their own stuff.. i know which files are supported and they pretty much all are as they work on usb drive i suppose they ll also work on hdd the problem is in tv detecting the drive as i described above, but tnx for answering.. if someone has samsung tv 2016 model you can also tell me which hdd works for you

Still should be OK.

There are so many HDD models that Samsung as a company has decided to not go near "will this work" questions. Even I can't be sure but it should work.

The AVSForum might have a thread just about this model but the likelihood the 2TB will work is above 99%.

Hello, just in case anyone needs this, i finally bought external hdd its 2tb wd elements 2.5". Its recognised by my samsung 50ku6072 tv and it displays content normally. when connected to tv the hdd goes into a sleep mode i guess after a while of not using it, which is great cuz i dont want to be unpluging it all the time or have it work the whole day without using it. otherwise it turns on and off with tv. So to answer my own question the tv does recognise a 2tb hdd at least the one i have and it does go into sleep mode (energy saving) if u are not using it.
I did however read on some forum that some people have a problem when the content on your hdd gets over 1tb, sometimes the tv cant process it or something and u cant play the content, i ll have to wait and see if its true for my tv and my hdd. but i hear there is a solution to this, by spliting it to two partitions of 1tb or 4x500gb...
Hope this helps someone someday Happy
