Question

Samsung Smart TV unable to connect to internet (suddenly)

Feb 23, 2015 10:45PM PST

I have a Samsung smart TV (40 inch) unsure of the model number as i am at work. It has a wired connection to my BT Infinity router, up until this morning it was working fine when accessing the smart hub, Netflix etc. This morning when accessing smart hub the TV said that it could not connect to the internet, I ran a test, TV said cable to router fine, but no internet. WIFI on all other devices is working ok. I have reset the router, disconnected tv from the mains, swapped the ASDL filter for a new one and changed all cabling (wall-router/router-tv). The TV is still giving me the same error message. I'm unsure of the next step, any help would be appreciated.

I did what Pawlowjp did to no avail. I don't know what happened. Was there an update on smarthub that affected the firmware? But it should have been reset when we did the factory reset but still the condition persisted.

Feb 24, 2015 1:10AM PST

My apps started updating this morning. After that nothing worked. My Samsung 3D app has chinese\japanese characters associated to it.

I chatted with Samsung and they gave me the typical fixes that anyone with common sense would know to do already. Basically they're useless. Especially 1st level support

I am having the same issues! (but in Canada)
Feb 24, 2015 1:15AM PST

I believe I am having a similar problem. Have a samsung smart tv (UN32EH5300). Last time I used it, it worked fine. Have had it over a year and had no problems. But today when I tried to connect to Netflix it said that the network is not connected, I ran a network set up and it said "Network setup complete, but cannot connect to the Internet. Contact your service provider to access the internet". It is connecting to the router and I know the internet is working because I am connect on my laptop and my phone.

I am not very tech savy and all the IP address talk is very confusing to me. Is anyone able to help me fix this with ver simple directions? Happy

Tip:
Feb 24, 2015 5:04AM PST

When you see a lot of folk posting about this one, it's either after a big sales period like Christmas or the super bowl or it's Samsung's own services that went down.

I don't usually reveal what I know about this but due to how Samsung deployed in the USA their servers don't go down. They are cloud based here at the time I learned about all this. However if they update their services, things like this cause a lot of posts about it.

Always call these in so they know it's a problem.

Warranty?
Feb 24, 2015 11:14PM PST

If you have an active warranty why not contact the vendor and ask for a repair/replacement. If everyone did this Samsung would take a bit more notice.

connected to wireless router but not internet

On your Smart TV remote go to menu, support and software upgrade. And the problem will be solved.
Every now and then software needs to be upgraded.

Difficult to download a software update when the problem you're trying to solve is no internet connection.

Great Tip Thanks
Jun 28, 2015 8:29PM PDT

I used to be a QA tech for software/hardware and know routers, modems, internet IPs, DNS, etc... Was scratching my head why my router saw the SmartTV and the SmartTV also saw the router but no external connection to the internet. My other wireless devices, two laptops, Smart BluRay player, and Xbox 360 had internet access. I was doing hard and soft reboots of everything. Then simply followed your suggestion of a software update on the SmartTV. Then solved the problem! Thank you

same here; Norway. Also some peculiars
Feb 24, 2015 3:01AM PST

noticed something weird with my samsung

* at approximately 5 hours ago, son did not get internet connecting (streamed app and netflix just before
that)
* looked into it; network connectivity shows it connects to router but not "internet"
* tried different network/dns/gateway, tried different dns (google)
tried wireless (its usually wired), different wireless router/gateway/dns
* all other devices work fine

* enabled tcpdump on the router, it shows the samsung connects to 207.36.95.10 (https)
google shows this is "known"
* looked up 207.36.95.10 (which, translates to infolink.pavv.co.kr but seems to be somewhere in us; fort lauderdale)

address profile says its updated some 5 hours ago

either something fishy is going on, or some samsung servers are not behaving correctly

Same issue!
Feb 24, 2015 4:17AM PST

We're having the same problem, which started this morning 24th Feb 2015, with our Samsung Smart TV 32H5500 series. Never happened before! All over wireless devices are working correctly, but by coincidence I had just connected a new printer so thought that had something to do with it.

I rang our internet provider PlusNet and they've said everything is ok at their end. I've also telephoned Samsung twice and am now communicating via email. On the 1st occasion, the advisor asked me to update the TV but on the 2nd occasion (after that hadn't worked), they couldn't help at all because their system was down.

With the help of the forums I have:
Reset router
Updated & reset TV (more than once)
Changed DNS to 8.8.8.8 & back again

But still the same error message... Very frustrating but I'm relieved to see it's not just us.

Same here (in UK) on Sky Broadband
Feb 24, 2015 5:05AM PST

Exactly the same issue. Started today 24th Feb. Not had any problems before on my PS51e6500.

None of the proposed fixes, DNS changes, resetting or factory rebooting, work. We should contact Samsung and link this forum, as clearly this is affecting quite a few people. I wonder if how many.....

Surely if an issue at Samsung's end with a change to SmartHub connectivity, it would affect all their users, but I am seeing reports like this thread, and on Aussie and US forums, not yet the expected deluge if it was down for everyone.

Still, Samsung should be told, as they are often slow to react.

I have samsung smart TV and Samsung Blue Ray connected with LAN adapter, was working fine last night and now wont work today. All other devices in house work, called Cogeco Provider signal is strong. Tried changing DNS no luck, unplugged router etc. Nothing...still Network interference and unable to connect to internet. Hopefully this gets resolved soon on Samsungs end. Anyone have the Samsung Support number so I can call them? At least to report this happening and draw some attention to the issue. Thanks Courtney

Temp fix for Netflix
Feb 24, 2015 5:45AM PST

As others have discovered must be a Samsung issue as nothing worked with resetting etc but in my case I found none of the apps working except the browser app which connected ok.

Then in the Hub I noticed (this on a smart tv but forget series version) under the small live tv window there was a Netflix ad for a new show and when I clicked on that it opened the Netflix app and connected! Must have by-passed the normal launch for Netflix so was able to watch fine.

Backed out and different ad so no way back in but refreshed the Hub and the same ad appeared so again able to watch.

Well better than nothing and expect they will fix soon.

Temporary solution
Feb 24, 2015 5:57AM PST

The problem is with DNS. TV is testing the connection querying www.samsung.com .
This time it is doing it again and again - the reason probably is that they changed something in DNS configuration and now the response is very big:

www.samsung.com. 0 IN CNAME www.samsung.com.edgekey.net.
www.samsung.com.edgekey.net. 0 IN CNAME www.samsung.com.akadns.net.
www.samsung.com.akadns.net. 0 IN CNAME china-www.samsung.com.edgekey.net.
china-www.samsung.com.edgekey.net. 0 IN CNAME china-www.samsung.com.edgekey.net.globalredir.akadns.net.
china-www.samsung.com.edgekey.net.globalredir.akadns.net. 0 IN CNAME e1722.g.akamaiedge.net.
e1722.g.akamaiedge.net. 2 IN A 23.59.103.46

CNAME to CNAME to CNAME... little strange - TV is not able to understand that.

I've just simply spoofed domain www.samsung .com that TV gets in response just:
www.samsung.com. 86400 IN A 23.59.103.46

And that solved problems. I think that is the only solution before they fix this.

- Collapse -
How simple?
Feb 24, 2015 6:29AM PST

how do you spoof the domain?

- Collapse -
DNS spoofing
Feb 24, 2015 6:56AM PST

Simplest way is to set own DNS server in your LAN, configure www.samsung.com zone and forwarding for all other zones to real DNS and at last point TV to use your fake DNS server.

Huh?
Feb 24, 2015 7:04AM PST

Could you explain that in a dumbed down, plain English kind of way?
