Question

Samsung Smart-TV turns on by itself

Mar 7, 2015 1:15AM PST

Hi,

I recently bought a Samsung UE48HU7505 Smart-TV that works great, except one very annoying thing.

While in standby, it randomly turns it self on for about 20-40 seconds, then turns itself off again. I can notice it turning on by a clicking sound and the blue light underneath comes on. However, the screen itself does NOT turn on, the screen is black with no backlight.

Normally, while annoying, this wouldn't be a great issue, but unfortunately it also turns on my CEC (Anynet+) connected receiver, and it never turns it off again. Since my cable box is connected to the receiver, we've been wakened several nights by the TV sound blasting though the speakers.

I contacted Samsung support, who asked me to do the following:

- Turn off automatic updates (didn't help)
- Perform factory reset (didn't help)
- Update firmware (was already latest)

Have anyone else experienced such problems? Is it normal behaviour, or could replacing it fix the issues? I'd rather not spend a lot of time fixing it, if the new TV will behave just the same...

Answer
Yes.

While it didn't happen to me there are reports of firmware issues that wake the TV for checks on updates, recording and more. ALWAYS CALL THESE BUGS IN. Get your transaction number and ask when they will fix it. If they never do, then you have your documentation for exchange or refund.

Thanks. I have a 30-day refund which I can use within the next week, but I was hoping for a solution so that I could keep the TV (as I really like it, disregarding the problem) and avoid the hassle of returning it.

I anyone else has a solution or suggestion, please let me know Happy

Remember there are bugs in the code.

And only Samsung can address that. The story is simple. TV is produced but the code is not widely tested. Later someone on some TV channel finds what you noted and then the teams get the bug report and new firmware is issued. This can really upset folk that thought this was perfected before shipment.

The idea of firmware is that you ship now and catch up later on bugs.

If you don't call Samsung, you may be missing out of what update or fix there is now.

Update

Samsung serviced the TV, replacing the mainboard.

Problem is, it still happens. Can someone please confirm this is not normal behavior, i.e a feature?

Sadly, it's widely reported.

I found the solution for my TV

I had exactly the same issue and the solution was to turn off the automatic updates.
Navigate to Support->Online Updates->Standby Mode Upgrade->Select off or specific hour.
For me it was defined as run automatic updates after 2 hours of standby. For some reason TV turns on the back-lights during the update.
