I either try the external monitor or pull the drive to put on a cable, in a case or in a desktop PC.
-> I take it this is your first PC failure as you didn't keep a backup of your files. Given all the viruses and more I can't guess why folk risk their files with no backup.
My son's other make laptop lasted about 3 years. It was not an expensive laptop so we knew it would only go so far. We picked up a few Samsungs and they are fine.

Samsung laptops don't last more than 3 years. This was verified by the customer service agent that repeatedly told me, "you're no longer covered by our warranty." I have always treated my laptop very well. One day, I got a white strip running vertically along my screen that covered 75% of my screen. Needless to say, the laptop is now useless and not only, I can't even retrieve the work I had on it because the window pops up on the other, blank side of the screen. Maybe I could if I invested in a monitor that I wouldn't have needed if the laptop wasn't a piece of junk and lasted more than 3 years. When I buy a laptop, I expect it to last more than that and when I notified customer service of this problem, all he repeatedly kept telling me was that it was out of warranty. I have gone to Apple with products outside of warranty time and apple customer service have NOT treated me like this. Now I have to buy another laptop out of my student budget. Thanks, Samsung.
