Samsung R40 plus - Is it possible to upgrade Hard Disk

Feb 22, 2009 4:26AM PST

I have a Samsung R40 plus and am starting to get low on disk storage. I hold a fair bit of media on the hard disk.

Does anyone know if it is it possible to upgrade the Hard Disk to give me more storage space.
If so, what is the best disk to go for and is there a program available to facilitate the change of hard disk.

Thanks in advance.

Bob.

car21milton,

You should be able to use a standard hard-drive of any capacity available in the same size as what you currently have. If you're not mechanically or technically savvy, you might want to have a computer expert upgrade the drive for you, and in some cases, they can transfer the current data over. I always recommend you make and keep a backup at home, as it's a standard in the industry that computer techs can't take responsibility in case something goes wrong. If they lose your data, you're out. So please, consider the backup.

There are "clone drive" programs available if you want to do it yourself, and you'll likely save some money doing it that way if you're comfortable doing that.

Thanks for the reply.
Could you be more specific about the hard drive.
i.e. Recommended a size, manufacturer even a part number or supplier so that I could purchase the correct item.
Thanks.

car21milton,

Most computer repair facilities can do upgrades, and would likely be able to find, or even install a new drive and trasnfer the information for you. I don't believe the drives are proprietary.

RPM / 3.5

I guess just RPM & physical size matter is this case & with it removed from the case you can connect it to your PC, copy the files. Then connect the new drive and copy there.

======= Yes i have built my own PC & fix little things like that myself cuz i'm in recession mode (always am in these instances) ===========

mpjkraak,

Let me check on that.

If you're looking to transfer the straight drive over, you might need to get a disk-copy software program like Partition Magic or Norton's Ghost.

I've done this on several PCs with SCSI or SATA connections without a hitch, but I'm not sure on the internal connections on laptops, as the portability and size prohibit the schematics I've personally worked with. I'm leaning towards an external USB or Firewire hard-drive enclosure, but let me ask if someone has a better idea.

Quick question

Do you have Samsung Recover Solution on your harddrive?

It would be in Start > Programs > Samsung > Samsung Recover Solution.

Let me know.

Backup

car21milton,

You can probably back up your drive to DVDs if you have a writer on the machine.

I'd still suggest backing up your other important files seperately, but if you do perform a backup to DVD and reinstall the OS that came with the system, you should be able to import all of your information on your new drive.

Old drive > Samsung back up to DVD > change drive > Install recovery disc on new drive > run Samsung backup from DVD to new drive.

That's the general idea of what I'm imagining could best allow you to get a bigger drive and keep your data. Please note that I can't take responsibility if something goes wrong - or for lost data resulting from this suggestion, so please use our support in your local area for assistance.

Does that help?
