I received a letter from Amazon yesterday telling me that from 14 Sept I will no longer be able to use My Amazon Prime video account unless I upgrade my TV, the set was brought in 2011, they suggest I buy an Amazon Fire TV at a discounted price of £39, well I do not want to dictated to by Amazon, can anyone tell me why my set will not work with Prime, needless to say I have cancelled my account

Answer
Too many reasons.

Samsung does not write that app so when features the app author exceeds what the host device can offer or there's a court decision (ask if you want an example) then it's game over.

I have the Amazon Fire TV and it's quite nice.

-> I wondered how consumers would react to Smart TVs that apps would age and go away.

could you clarify please, are you saying that my four year old TV has had it I know things move fast these days but come on, apparently Netflix will work
so I might think about that in stead.

It was the beginning of the Smart TV. Makers put just enough CPU and RAM in these to get going. As consumers demanded better apps, these apps could overrun what these machines had. So eventually models will get app drop.

What's interesting is the posts you read where consumers flame loud and hard about it. This was pretty easy to see that it was going to be nothing like a TV which you got decades from.

If you feel there was some breach of warranty, pursue that angle.

thanks for the helpful reply, is there a way to upgrade the RAM in this set? as for warranty I don't think I would get anywhere

Even if we could

Amazon and others filter the sets by model and not by installed RAM. It could be an underlying CPU, OS or other limitation.

It was easy for me to see that in just a few years Smart TVs would get into trouble as we get newer sets with more this and that inside. The consumers in the market for new sets will demand more than last years set so the march continues forward but the old sets are left with what they had.

You see similar outcries in the PC world where folk dropped thousands on a PC and just 5 years later they can't run this or that. Now that this is in Smart TVs, we see the same outcome. The fix for the TV is thankfully cheaper as we plug in the Amazon Fire TV, Roku or other thing.
