Samsung LN46B650 DLNA with LG NAS

Apr 14, 2010 8:11AM PDT

After many hours of Samsung tech support up to level 2 - Samsung said "The LN46B650 is not a DLNA device... if it doesn't work now, it won't ever work". This is a relayed message from a Product Support Specialist at Samsung.

This statement is in response to attempting to the get the LN46B650 to recognize an LG NAS N2B1. A Western Digital WDTV LIVE and a iPod app, ML Player Lite both recognize the LG NAS without a problem.

When I asked Samsung for a compatibility matrix for the LN46B650 or if any newer models were compatible with the LG NAS, Samsung could not provide an answer. No new firmware will be produced for the LN46B650, so there is no hope that this issue will be fixed.

So you're telling me the TV (LN55B650) I paid almost $2000 back in August is no longer getting firmware updates from Samsung and will never recieve a Netflix widget, which was advertised as coming soon and which was one of the primary reasons I bought this particular TV. Thanks a lot Samsung. Guess I should have waited and got the Vizio or LG.

bpatrick72,

I don't know if it will receive Netflix. It was not a planned widget for that model. Who advertised Netflix as a widget on the LN55B650?

I'm pretty sure that I saw it on the Samsung website back right before I bought my TV. It may have been on the Internet@TV section but seeing as how that's what my TV has, I was expecting to see it at some point.

bpatrick72,

The 2010 models have Netflix, but the 2009 models do not.

To the original poster, I also don't have a list of compatible devices. There are literally hundreds to test, and I don't know which ones will or will not work.

Samsung LN46B650 and LG NAS via DLNA
Apr 25, 2010 3:40AM PDT

So will there be a firmware upgrade that includes compatibilty between the Samsung LN46B650 and the LG NAS? The 2nd level tech told me that "the LN46B650 was not truly a DLNA device...". This is contridicting the adverstised specs.

I had asked Samsung for a list of 46" LCD's that are DLNA compatible with the LG NAS, but did not get a reply. Can someone at Samsung substantiate this?

Thanks!

Samsung DLNA and LG NAS

I purchased the same LG NAS model and I have found exactly the same problem.

A Netgear NAS works perfectly, but as soon as the LG (newer NAS) is attached the Samsung TV just doesn't detect it).

Why do you assume the problem is with the TV and not the NAS? I have tested quite a few DLNA media servers and none of them have failed completely, though most needed some tweaking (of profiles) to get them to work well.

FWIW, there seems to be a modified version of the LG firmware that includes Twonkyserver. This is the preferred server for most NAS devices and has a lot of support, including profiles for the Samsung TV.

I will take a look at this firmware and possibly give it a go.

How will this enable to DLNA function to communicate with the TV, I'm maybe not as technically aware as I should be in that respect.

Karl.

DLNA

The TV has a DLNA client which advertises its presence on the local network. Any DLNA-compatible server (PCSM, Windows MP11+ and many others) will detect this and, if they recognise the profile, announce their availability to the TV - each server will then appear in the Sources list, or in Media Play.

There are very many media servers available for Windows systems, fewer for Macs and Linux. The NAS almost certainly uses Linux. All the others I've seen licence Twonkyserver, but LG may have chosen another.

LG NAS & Samsung TV

You may be correct, however, LG has not made any updates to their firmware and my other DLNA devices (WD TVLIVE and an iPOD Touch app both see the LG-NAS ok.

Threnor's firmware isn't compatible with the N2BDD1 unit which I have, otherwise I would install it. Has anyone gotten it to work with the N2BDD1 (Blu-ray)?
