Samsung LN46A650 vs. LNT4671F, any improvement?

Apr 1, 2008 3:21AM PDT

I don't know if these are really rumours or not, but after chatting it up at AVS Forums, and from all I've been hearing of late, it seems like the newer models from Samsung seem to have some issues that plagued the old series from the LNT4665F, like the auto turn-off, turn-on glitch that they keep talking about. Are these true? Did Samsung really lose some quality in manufacturing over last year's models? Someone please separate fact from fiction about the A650.
Thanks in advance...

I was considering the 46W4100 as an alternate...
Apr 1, 2008 6:08AM PDT

Yes, thank you for that suggestion. However, I'm gonna wait for a pro and con comparison between the LN46A650 and the upcoming 46W4100 and see which one of those two models will perform better at the end of the day. To me, I probably won't see too much in the way of difference... That's gonna be a tough call, imo.

A preliminar opinion
Apr 4, 2008 11:57PM PDT

Yesterday I exchanged my 4671F for this newer model the LN46A650. What I can tell is that when used as a PC monitor it is clearly much more defined and you can read text much better as well as for video editing. As a TV, it has a lot of more setup options but the real drawback is in picture "look and feel" of realism when using the 120Hz feature, the older model 4671 beats this newer model by MUCH!!! I already downloaded de new patch for the 45A650 hoping for some improvement but nothing achieved. I am still diving in all the settings but it seems that the glossier screen of the 4671 is the differentiation. I am very dissapointed and will try for another 2 days before returning this unit back. Don't know if this is the new 120Hz feature look of just it doesn"t work in mine.

120Hz LN46A650
Apr 28, 2008 1:20AM PDT

You said the look and feel of 120Hz on the LN46A650 was not as good as the last year model. Was the setting of 120Hz Low-Medium-High Make a difference on either LCD? I have heard if the setting is on High 120Hz on certain programming such of sports fast moving scenes, there could be blur effect in the picture. Have you notice this?

Thanks, but now changed my mind and waiting for Sony's 120Hz
Apr 28, 2008 4:03AM PDT

Thank you for that information. However, even tho I do like that Samsung has done some good with their new 2008 lineup so far, I just feel that Sony is finally going to do things right. It seems like I can finally feel confident that the W4100 will probably outperform the A650 with the 120Hz feature, I have a hunch, and probably may competitively priced with the A650 before too long. I'm definitely anticipating that right off the bat. However, I'm wondering how well 120Hz did on last year's XBR4 LCDs? Should this come as a thought about what to expect from Sony's 2008 lineup this year?

I would wait to see the ne LG LG90 L.E.D series lcd t.v !!
May 2, 2008 3:15PM PDT

I have the Samsung LNT-5281F L.E.D t.v and beside some software glitch's that was resolved with new firmware as CNET review on the 46" model it's awesome the Motion plus feature out peformed the 120mhz of other models even though it's only rated at 60mhz!! I would wait and compare the LG90 L.E.D it's suppose to have 1million:1 contrast and is going for THX certification!! biggest size is only 47" it has 4 hdmi 1.3 imputs and real cinema 24p. It's will not be obsolete any time soon this is the technology to invest in!! http://ca.lge.com/hdtv/index.html go to LCD and then additional lcd t.v and click on 9 series!!

the new A650 samsungs got rid of the old problems with the 71F series. No more triple-ball effect, no more glitching out on HD sources (mainly blu-ray and HD-dvd), and most importantly no bleeding pixel problem (at least not that I have seen yet)

The contrast is also double at 50,000:1.

I am going to wait until the XBR6 is widely available before I make a recommendation, and if I were in the market I would wait to see them both side by side before making up my mind.

True, thanks... I'll wait to see the both W4100 and A650
May 2, 2008 3:15PM PDT

I'll definitely wait to see the W4100 Bravia and the Samsung A650 side-by-side on the wall to see which one of those two models will wind up being the better set to have in my home. They both sort of sound evenly spec'd out, in my view. Looks great on paper, but after seeing the A650 get the Editor's Choice award, I only have to believe that Sony's not taking that too lightly that their spotlight has been stolen away from them.

Sony vs Samsung
Sep 19, 2008 1:41AM PDT

I spent alot of time investigating before I made my purchase. I even went to Best Buy where they had Sony and Samsung side by side. Pictures seemed identical. I also found out that they both had the same proccessor which was made by Samsung. Beware of these low ball prices you see on the web. I tried to order my Samsung 46A650 from 4 different internet dealers and found out they wouldn't sell it to me unless I bought add ons from them. I ended up buying it from Amazon (slightly higher price) where it was delivered and set up for me in a first class manner. Overall, I'm very happy with my set and have no complaints.

XBR vs. Sansung LN46A650
Oct 22, 2008 1:07AM PDT

I compared the LN46A650 side-by-side with the XBR6 and personally thought the Samsung had much better colors than the Sony - more depth, more vibrancy. Of course these store comparisons are always subject to whomever messed with the TV before you got there.

Regarding "issues" with the 46A650 I believe these have all been addressed with the latest firmware - at least according to what I've researched over at avsforum.com.

Samsung Update
Oct 22, 2008 8:31AM PDT

Even though its been said that Samsung had a slight problems with its A650 series and fixed it, another problem has recently surfaced. Several times when I turn my set on, it doesn't go on. Now this may happen 1 out of 5 times, but it does happen. Samsung was aware of this new problem and sent me out a firmware update. I've been very impressed with their customer service as they answer their calls quickly and no one from India picks up the phone. Its all USA !!! For those debating if they should buy one, get it.... its a great TV. Everyone has commented thats its the best picture they have seen.

Fact: The 650/750 series solved the bleeding pixel problem we saw on so many 71F's (our demo model went through 3 in about 9 months). They also fixed the triple ball effect, creating a smooth transition through fast moving pictures.

I just purchased this set a few weeks ago and so far have not experienced random power issues. I have, however, had a few audio drops but that may be my sat signal as I have not noticed it during games or movies. So far I like the set except for the remote. If only the programming would now accelerate itself....talk about some %$$#@! signals!
