Samsung LN40B750 White Flickering & Shutting Off

by DonVitto / August 20, 2010 2:31 PM PDT

I purchased a LN40B750 from amazon.com on June 4, 2009. I picked it up in Washington State and brought it back to Canada with me. The TV has been great...up until last week.

Out of nowhere, it began flickering white, like someone was cranking backlight up and down - especially during high contrast scenes and when I turned on the menu of my digital cable box.

Tonight, the picture began dropping out. The sound and everything would be on, but no picture. I would turn the TV off and back on - and it would repeat: flicker white, shut off.

The most heartbreaking thing is that the unit is not even two and a half months out of warranty. I registered the unit, which I understand extends the warranty for three months, but that does not appear to be the case in Canada. PLEASE HELP!!

Samsung LN40B750 White Flickering & Shutting Off

DonVitto,

I can request that your case be reviewed, however, it's up to Canada to decide. If you can post a transaction number here, I'll be happy to pass that to one of my contacts who works up there to see if something can be done. If you don't have one, call back, explain your situation and see if you can have the unit serviced. If they decline again, ask for a transaction number and post it here.

No promises, but I'll be happy to give it a shot.

Warranty A-OK!
by DonVitto / August 21, 2010 1:14 AM PDT

HDTech - Thank you for offering to intervene. I think that it's going to end up being OK, after all. I was worried about having registered my TV on samsung.ca, vs samsung.com for the 90 day extended warranty bonus. Turns out in Canada that they have the Samsung Star Program, which does just that.

I spoke to a very lovely customer support rep. She initially told me that I was out of warranty, and offered to find me a service centre. I told her that I had registered and about the Star Program, and she was fine with extending the 90 day bonus. Thank Vishnu, as I just BARELY make it under the total 15 month warranty. There appeared that there might be a glitch with me having bought the TV in the US; however, I did read an epic thread between you and a compatriot of mine ('warranty for Canadians' - Dec 2009) and reminded her that I did buy it from an authorized dealer and that the warranty covers North America. She was fine with that, as well and set up the warranty service call.

As I am typing this, I just received a confirmation email and the service folks ought to be contacting me soon. I have to say that after reading about many 'Samsung customer service nightmares' that I am pleasantly surprised that my experience isn't even close to that. Nice work (so far), Samsung!

Back to the technical side of things, I did read something online about adjusting the Power saving mode to eliminate the white flicker. I played with it and determined the following: when it is on Auto or Off, I get the flicker. When it is on Low, I eventually get a flicker. But when it is on Medium or High, the picture is stable. Same thing with the picture settings. I of course had it on Custom, but when I set it to Standard or Movie, it was fine. When I set it to Custom or Dynamic, it started to flicker.

I'm wondering if you've seen this before and/or if you have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Also, what happens if it cannot be repaired, or if the repair costs more than the TV? How many times does it have to be repaired before I can call it a lemon?

Thanks again - DV

I'm having this exact problem!

Did you ever get this problem figured out? If so how did they fix it?

My tv has been flickering, and tonight the picture completely went out. I still have sound, and if I turn the tv off then on again I get it back for a few seconds. I'm not sure if I'm under warranty, with my like I'm probably just out.

Please let me know if you were able to fix your tv, and how they fixed it. Bigcsorren@yahoo.com
