Samsung LN40A550 - Negative Image - Please help

Aug 30, 2009 4:55AM PDT

I got a LN40A550 TV in April 2008. It was perfectly okay till yesterday and all of a sudden the TV started showing pictures in extremely bad quality. It is showing negative image. I noticed that if I switch off the TV for few hours and start it back on the picture is normal and it again starts showing negative image after the TV is on for few hours. I am not sure what I should do about this. Looks like this is a problem experienced by few other people. I read something about replacing DMD board to fix this issue.

The problem is there even if I disconnect all the cables and just look at the empty TV screen (where it says waiting for signal).

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Please see the pictures below to see how bad the TV is...

Samsung LN40A550 - Negative Image - Please help

dvsrikanth -

This may be caused by one of the boards, however, I can be pretty sure that it's not the DMD board. The DMD acronym stands for Digital Micro-mirror Device, and is a term for DLP technology, not LCD technology.

You can call 800-SAMSUNG to see if they can assist with a repair.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

Just need couple of things before I call Samsung customer service

1. Is there any technical term for this problem?
2. I recently connected my PC to the PC-Input of the TV. Do you think if that caused the problem to occur?
3. Do you by any chance what is the name of the board that could be broken.
4. Since it is more than 1 year I purchased the TV I guess I have to pay myself for the repair. Is there anyway around this? The reason I am asking this is that I had a old Sony Rear projection TV and the heat of the bulb melted the plastic around it. This happened 5 years after the TV was purchased and yet Sony replaced me with an alternate TV.

dvsrikanth,

1. Well, they seem to have the Moire effect, but negative image is pretty descriptive. They're likely not going to diagnose it right there, but between "moire" and "negative", you should get to a technician.
2. I wouldn't think the PC input had any affect, unless it was maybe pushed up against the wall with the PC cable attached. If not, it's probably not the result of using the PC Cable. If you want to test this theory, attach it again and see what happens.
3. That's up to the technician to decide. If I quote a board and someone replaces it and it's the wrong one, I don't want to take that responsibility.
4. How much more than a year? If it's under 15 months, you can register the unit online first, which will get you an additional 3 months. If it's older than that, post it here and I'll see what I can do - but I can't promise or suggest that I can promise anything.

Usually melting issues are handled a little differently, so I can't speak to that either directly or comparatively.

Keep me posted.
