Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV---green screen? wont turn on??

by nstwinmom / January 10, 2010 9:01 AM PST

Well here's hoping someone here may have some suggestions for me.
We have a 40" LN40A550 LCD in our bedroom that was purchased Oct 29 2008. So...just BARLEY out of warranty..of course.
Its been acting up the past few weeks, appears to be getting worse by the day. It started with randomly when you would turn the tv on the sound would be there but not picture? Just a black screen?
Now--you turn it on and it wont turn on at all..although the led is flashing. The TV itself keeps flicking on and off(no picture or sound), the remote is useless while this is happening. Then after several attempts it picks up a screen...and its distorted. Often Green, kind of snowy I guess?? And then it gives this loud screeching sound? After a few minutes, not sure if it does it on its own, or if its me messing around with it trying to turn the blasted thing off manually! It picks up the picture...and is FINE! Now...if I turn it off and then within a short period of time try and turn it back on its fine. If its hours until the next swtich on, the same thing happens??
Has anyone experienced this? If this is going to be a costly fix I can most certainly say I will never buy another Samsung again. Being only 2 months out of warranty and having to put money into a $1000.00 TV is not something I am happy about.
What are the chances I could battle this out with Samsung for them to honour the fix at this point????

BTW: we do run a satillite receiver, that I have already tried swapping that out, as well I have swapped the HDMI cables.

You mave have a longer warranty
by eric61968 / January 10, 2010 6:32 PM PST

I have the exact piece of junk model and when I registered it online 11/16/08 the e-mail confirmation said I had a free 3 month warranty extension. When I called Samsung customer service Saturday he told me I had the extra 3 months free. Good thing because my tv won't come back on. So make sure you call soon if you haven't already because it looks like you have 18 days left on your warranty.

I'm not expecting much, but here's hoping.
I am pretty surprised to see the amount of feedback that comes up when you google this problem with this model online??
Not impressed.

I wish you luck in getting it fixed. I've been trying to call them this morning to get mine fixed but after hitting option 1 twice it's like their system freezes. Nothing but dead air. This is the second Samsung tv I've owned and I'm just fed up. I was surprised as well to see this model line having major problems. I hate to say it but I'm buying Sony from now on. Just got off the phone with them and even with the e-mail proving I registered the tv they show it being out of warranty and I have to fax proof which will take 2-3 days for them to process. After that they can set up an appointment to come fix it. I do hope you fair better than me. I am SO MAD right now.

Well-I just got off the phone with them. Nothing they can do. Its out of warranty "Mame I understand your frustration...".
I asked about this 3 month extended warranty, apparently you had to register the TV at the time of purchase in order to be eligable for that. Something we never did unfortunately. What the he** is the difference if its registered NOW or last year? We have proof of purchase? Spoke to my husband and he thinks where we purchased it on his VISA it may have automatically given us extra warranty? Samsung still wouldnt cover it, but VISA would basically re-imburse us the cost. Thats the next step for me to look into.
Samsung suggested a repair center, they charge $90/hr+tax for in home service(the intial visit), about half that if i want to take the TV off the wall and lug it into them. ERR!!!!
I made sure to advise the CSR rep at Samsung this would be the last Samsung purchase from us and for him to add that into his customer feedback notes! I agree with you STICK TOO SONY!! The brand you know!Uh!!This is RIDICULOUS!

I don't see why it would matter if you registered it or not. The first person I talked to Saturday mentioned the extension before I even said a word about it. I don't remember reading it anywhere in my warranty booklet saying I have to register it to get 3 free months. I only found out after I registered. I would ask how they can give it to some but not all. I told the woman I talked to today that I would never buy another Samsung product. I also said I am going to make it my personal mission to tell as many people about my bad experiences with two tv's now. I am very comfortable and good at talking to complete strangers. Anytime I'm in a place that sells Samsung tv's I'll make sure every customer knows how bad customer service is and how quickly the tv's break. BTW, people from Samsung do watch these forums and reply from time to time. I hope they do and pass on everything I've just said to their bosses. If you can't get them to honor a warranty you rightly deserve there are videos on youtube showing how to fix it yourself. I wish you luck.

well my husband just got off the phone with Visa, and sure enough Visa matches whatever warranty Samsung offered X 2. So if it was 1 year parts and labour they will match it for an additional year Happy
Calling the service people now!!!

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
