Samsung LN32A550 w/n control volume of amp/speaker system

Feb 24, 2009 4:35AM PST

In my RV, I have a previous amp/speaker system that formally was controlled by the TV. When I hook up this amp/speaker (It has no volume controls itself)to the Samsung, the TV controls only the speakers on the TV and not the external amp/speakers. Is there a way to have the TV control the volume of the external speakers/amp?
Thanks,
Mike B.

How is it connected?

It's important to post how you have your setup connected. What outputs are you using from the TV? What kind of connections/cables are you using? Are you using both the TV speakers and your own speakers at the same time?

I tried all connectons

My amplifier has no volume/fader/speaker controls. The TV does not seem to control the external amp volume. What connections do I use to control the external speakers/amp from the TV? Or is there a menu item to control external amps.
Thanks,
Mike B

Use the headphone jack

If you want to control the volume from the TV, you'll have to use the headphone jack -- you can pick up a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter from a store like Walmart or Target or Radioshack.

You can't control the volume of the RCA or optical outputs from the TV, sadly...

Thank You!

Thank You for your time & info. It seems strange that my previous TV could control the externals from the remote.
Thanks again.

I have an A550 too - I'm glad it came with a headphone jack. I have a very similar setup, and it's perfect for being able to control the volume (and using PC speakers on it, saving me a lot of money and getting good sound in the process). Glad to hear you resolved the situation.

Thank you so much, I had the same problem, and using the headphone jack fixed it.
However, does that affect the sound quality at all?

Also - the mute button still doesn't work (I get a "not available" message on screen when I press it).
Anyone's got any idea why?

parabol64,

Actually, no - I haven't encountered why the mute button wouldn't work with a headphone jack. I could speculate, but let me see what I can find.

To mute the television speakers altogether, there is an option in the menu as well - and everything I know about that suggests that it would probably be your best solution.
