Question

Samsung LED tv dark patch

May 22, 2017 2:39AM PDT

I apologise in advance if this subject has been discussed before. After about four and a half years my Samsung LED 24"tv developed a dark patch over about a quarter of the screen at the bottom centre. I was advised that it was not repairable cost effectively. I am old enough to still think that TVs should last more then four and a half years and I took it up with Samsung. They referred me to their local repair centre who immediately told me that this was a common fault with flat screens and confirmed the point about cost effectiveness. I put this to Samsung and their response was 'this is not correct information as there are no manufacturing defects .with any Samsung products this moment in time'. I wonder if this correct and would appreciate knowing how many other Samsung users have experienced a similar problem. With thanks in anticipation.

Answer
You can find this with a google.

So while I've seen it on way too many LCD panels the life span is affected by temperature, humidity and more so to flat out say it will last without issue for 5 years is a stretch now that Pb has been removed from solder.

What is this? Pb? Yes, Pb.

"Consumer electronics are designed to have a life span of three to five years"

So this can rankle folk that are expecting more.

Dark patches on screen -2.5 year old 60"Samsung HD LCD tv.
Jan 7, 2018 10:32PM PST

My 60" 2.5 year old Samsung LCD HD All the bells and whistles already has the dark patch ghosting all across the middle of the picture. I have 5 Samsung flat screen tv's two are brand new, no issues yet, two have problems. The dark patches on the 2.5 year old tv. lines down the left side on my older Samsung. It has had the lines down the left side for years but they come and go and the tv is in the bathroom so it doesn't really matter. The dark patches on my awesome 60 inch nearly new tv is not cool.

My 60in Samsung lcd tv lasted a little over 5 years and started developing 2 very pronounced dark patches with are very noticeable during darker scenes. Bright backgrounds much less so. Very disappointed. I also think a very expensive tv should have better longevity than this.
I have always thought Samsung put together very nice looking products and am tempted to go that way again but I decided I’m buying a lg OLED tv instead. Will use the Samsung for a gaming display. Sad

Didn't OLED have life span issues too?

If I google that, OLED does not ensure long life spans.

Dark patches on Samsung TV

If this is true why is my Walmart 200$ 50 inch Flat screen working very well with no dark patches and it’s 2 years older than my Samsung?
I think it’s a Samsung problem!

What is Samsung doing about this issue?

This is really mind blowing that Samsung has not jumped in to help all of us resolve this issue.
I've decided to boycott Samsung products. I'm going to get rid of my Samsung 65inch TV and get a Sony or Vizio.

Its easy enough to fix...

You can note 100% remove, but very dramatically reduce the dark spots on your LCD/LED TV.
But you will have to do some work and you will have to take it apart. So you should be comfortable doing this, or know someone who is.

You will need an appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws and new, untreated, not coated, not infused with ANY cleaning agent, cloth for wiping.

You need to take out the LCD/LED panel - depending on model this can mean taking apart more or less of your TV - usually its not too much work. When you get to the LCD/LED panel itself, you then have to clean each layer and remove it, cleaning the next plastic layer with the aforementioned cloth. The biggest culprit will likely be the plastic/acrylic foil closest to the backlight... this very gradually traps condensation over time which discolours the the material ever so slightly but the mature of the TV is that this will be amplified. After wiping everything (make really sure its all dry) you can put it back together again.
You will notice the discoloration is only a fraction of what it was before.

ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE TAKING APART ELECTRONICS.
It will obviously void your warranty. Make you you re-assemble it correctly! If you are familiar with taking apart laptops for upgrading them, this is not hard at all. If you've never taken apart a computer, laptop etc - then this is NOT FOR YOU. Get someone to do it for you.

hi, i am new here. my Samsung uhd 4k 40 inch tv has a dark spot on the bottom left corner of the screen. i bought it the tv from Best Buy online in December 2016. i only noticed the probem when google is on or when the screen is white. also the bottom right area of the screen is yellowish when the keyboard is up. the warranty has expired. geek squad might help. does climate affect new tvs and other electronics ? help is appreciated. thanks.

As to climate, yes.
Jul 13, 2018 6:53AM PDT

Hot humid climates could accelerate aging.

But the issue could be the usual failed backlight. Google "HDTV LED REPAIR YOUTUBE" to find folk that have seen this and other failures that could cause your dim area.
