Samsung LE40A856S1MXXU display problems

Jan 24, 2009 2:36AM PST

My two week old Samsung LE40A856S1MXXU has displayed some odd behaviour whilst watching ITV HD from a Humax Foxsat-HD box (FA CUP MAN U Vs SPURS).

Around ten times during the game the screen either faded to full white or changed to vertical stripes, this was only cured with a TV power cycle. The Freesat box is connected via the HDMI1 port on the TV.

Any ideas on correcting this fault through settings or if the set needs to be returned?

All inputs?

Does this happen with all inputs, or just the cable box?

Inputs
Jan 24, 2009 5:01PM PST

Yep,

Originaly observed on HDMI 1 (input from freesat box). Now seen on Composite (from bundled samsung DVD player F1080) and also from the built in Freeview tuner.

I have requested a returns number from the store (Novatech). They may request a samsung returns number.

Any ideas as to what the fault will be and if a replacement set will have the same features?
Regards

Jason

Not sure of the cause
Jan 26, 2009 10:20AM PST

I'm not sure of the cause, but I don't think that would necessarily happen again. It sounds like it may be an internal malfunction. But I can't pinpoint the problem without actually diagnising the unit.

Keep me posted.

Still happening
Feb 1, 2009 4:33AM PST

This is still hapopening on differening inputs. Time between events is anything from ~3 hours to 3 mins.

I have some pictures available if ou wish them emailed to you. I have got a returns number from the supplier and will take the set back tomorrow. They have suggested that I also contact samsung in the UK to discuss a waranty replacement. Apparantly they (novatech) will assess the set before sedning it to repair which could take anything up to a week before the set even leaves for review by samsung and replacement.

What is the usual process when a faulty set is recieved by samsung? I dont think that I would be happy with a repair of this

One more thing

One more thing to note is that when the screen goes grey or gets vertical stripes the fan in the unit sounds like it is running flat out.

Pics...

Jason,

I'm working to have a UK rep that I can discuss UK issues with in the near future. (The UK and Canada reps are my two goals for the next 6 months, so bear with me in the meantime). So to answer, I don't know what the U.K. has in place for terms of warranty issues. I can only speak definitively for US models. Sad (Workin' to change that, though!) Happy

If you would, post those pictures using imageshack.us or photobucket.com and post the links here. I'd be interested in taking a look at some of the symptoms you're describing.

This video is started as the first problem occurs, screen picture appears to freeze and then fade to grey. A manual restart and the fault happens again after ~1min. This time the picture is vertical multicoloured lines.

The input source for this was a Humax freesat HD box into HDMI3 of the TV. The channel was BBC HD. The same features are seen with all of the tested inputs (HDMI, composite and Scart) and the built in DTV decoder.

Same problem
Mar 8, 2009 1:41AM PST

but with my 2-year old LE32R71BX, it was supposedly repaired, the main PCB was replaced, but that doesn't seem to have helped. About 1 hour after setting it up again, part of screen developed some stripes again. Next day after a few hours it went blank/stripes again and even restarting the TV doesn't help. Gonna ship it back to service I guess, but some kind of help regarding what the reason might be, or what really needs changing, would really be helpful.

Sorry I cannot help as to the cause of the fault, I had my set replaced with a new set.

Diagnose

JaxJaxus,

The repairing technician would be a much better resource to find out what's wrong that anything I could speculate. I wish I had a better answer, but they'll be able to see the problem.
