Samsung LA40B550 wrong aspect radio only on 1 TV Channel!!

Hi there,

I have a Samsung LA40B550 and for some reason, when i am on Southern Cross Ten (Australian Free to air TV channel) the aspect ratio seems to be set on "Wide Zoom" (however says 16x9) and i can not change it. It only happens on this channel. If i have Southern Cross Ten running through my PVR the aspect ratio is correct.

Any Suggestions??

I've read a couple of reports, and while I'm not familiar with Australian channels (yet), my understanding is that Southern Cross 10 is, or was, simulcast in both SD and HD. If this is the case, which channel does this happen in?

Does the PVR show the exact same channel, or is there a .1 or .2 channel marker behind it?

The part that confuses me is that it's suggested that the PVR is sizing it properly, yet the tuner is not. If it's broadcast in a certain format, it should carry a flag telling the tuner to adjust.

If anyone can help on this, you'd have my gratitude. You also might try to reach the Samsung Customer Support Center at 1300-362-603 and get their take on this issue as well.

you're correct with the SD and HD Simulcast, however now SCTen has started broadcasting a 24 hour sport channel on their HD Channel (thought i'd tell you that so you can add it to your bank of knowledge)

anyway,

I've got the tuner on the PVR and TV on the exact same SD channels.

One thing that i've noticed is from time to time SCTen is actually in the correct aspect ratio - and bizarrely it seems to be only during the day.

i like to think i'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to TV's, but this has me rather confused!

Just out of curiosity, I rang up a Harvey Normans in the Victoria and NSW area to see if they had any of the same issues, and while they noted that aspect ratios can change (programming in 4:3 will still be in 4:3), it shouldn't be spreading out in a wide mode - those settings, at least they noted, were set on the in-store displays and worked properly. Likely, of course, through a cable or PVR-style box with a splitter. Just our luck, right?

So do either the HD or SD channel broadcast properly OTA? I can't think of any reason why they shouldn't, but does one work better than the other? And changing the picture settings in the TV menu doesn't help...?

I still might suggest calling the customer support line. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you might also call the station and ask why "Y" program looks good, but "Z" program doesn't. If the other channels look fine, it may be a broadcasting issue - which they may be aware of. As of yet, I don't have a definitive answer.

32 inch Samsung with same issue

I get exactly the same problem on my 32 inch Samsung LCD (don't have the model number handy). It is only on Southern Cross Ten and it really bugs me. My wife says she hardly notices it (which bugs me even more). It doesn't happen on my 4 year old 40 inch Samsung LCD (40R7 series). Please post back if you have solved your issue in the meantime. All the characters looks stretched out and overweight. When Gabrielle Anwar on Burn Notice looks almost normal something is horribly wrong!
