Question

Samsung HL-T5076S and Yamaha YAS-203

Sep 13, 2016 3:12PM PDT

Wondering if anyone has an answer...

I recently sold off my Pioneer Receiver and surround sound speakers in favour of something that takes up a little less space. The problem I am having (that nobody at Samsung seems to be able to help me with) is I do not get any sound from my Optical Out on my TV to the Optical In on my Soundbar. Seems like a pretty simple set in theory but in practice...no dice.

The only two components being routed into the TV at the moment via HDMI is my HD Cable box and my Samsung Blu Ray player. The thing that is bothering my most is that I seemed to have no issue with the optical out on the TV when it was connected to the Pioneer Receiver and another Optical cable ran from my Blu Ray to the Receiver. I have checked and rechecked that the connections are good and even tried a second optical cable...still nothing.

I decided to route the optical direct from my cable box and Blu Ray directly and the sound play fine through the Yamaha Sound Bar (as does a bluetooth connection through my phone fyi). The problem there is that there is only 1 optical in port in the sound bar so that means plugging and unplugging when I switch between TV and Blu Ray.

Any help would be appreciated. I have tried all setting on the TV menu and cannot get it to work...I am beginning to think that the optical output may have just coincidentally decided to fail!?

Clarification Request
Did you try changing the optical to just stereo?

Look at other sound formats on the Samsung and if you use Apps, check them for sound options. Most soundbars are not Dolby, 5.1 or such but stereo. Try PCM, stereo, etc.

Sorry but I didn't check your models and manuals. However it's a common issue. If no settings work, then does the red light show on the end of the optical cable (use paper, not directly to your eyes.)

The sound menu's on the TV are very generic and don't have anything I can see to switch from Optical to Stereo. The Sound Bar is capable of handling Dolby Digital and DTS signals and as I mentioned the Sound Bar works perfectly if I route my Optical direct from my Cable box or Blu Ray right into the Sound Bar...the only problem being the Yamaha Sound Bar only has 1 optical input so that means physically switching the cable when I want to watch a DVD or visa versa.

I have two optical cables and when plugged into the TV there is a red beam that is being transmitted through the cable so I'm convinced something in the TV is not, cannot or suddenly stopped transferring sound to the new Sound Bar...especially when direct connections work just fine.

Sorry but it's time to talk to Samsung.

Yes, I've heard all that before and still have no audio until I change to PCM or stereo.

Now I would be guessing it worked with this sound bar and stopped. I read this as if it never worked. That would change my answer.
