Question

Samsung Galaxy or IPad?

Jun 25, 2014 12:01AM PDT

Hi,

I'd like to buy my first tablet. I've heard Samsung Galaxy is IPad's rival and I'm trying to figure out which would be the better value in terms of features and longevity. Neither company's support will compare their product to their competitor's. Among other things, can tablets really be as powerful, flexible as desktops? Also, I have wireless connectivity at home, but don't have a carrier for being out and about. Is it better to buy something that's both wireless and can be connected to a cell service v.s. just wireless? I really don't know where to begin in trying to compare what's out there. (Should I succeed at finding a tablet, I might then go ahead and get an MP3 player Happy Again, it would be between Samsung and Apple. More decisions!) I've heard that you buy an Apple b/c you don't have to keep replacing it and that it's more secure, but...Galaxy lets you have two apps open at once and more. And I see that IPad has one lighter model and one with better resolution? Is that their only difference? Beyond that, I really don't know where to begin.

I really appreciate your help!

Take Care,
m-bny

Answer
In your case, the iPad.

You seem concerned about long term support and for most Android tablets you rarely see them issue OS updates where as Apple has been very good and only drops their oldest of models. Where as the other seems to be all over the map.

This round goes to Apple.

Ipad

I'll go for iPad for reliability and resolution. Nowadays you cannot distinguish cloned samsung galaxy unless you perform some routine to check it. SO go for Apple iPad.. Regarding security you can track your iPad once it got lost. You just register it online. Like mine I left my iPad in a cab and then driver open my iPad and connect to the internet and it shows my message where to bring back the item.

Samsung or ipad - maybe neither

Either can be very expensive and maybe overkill. If all you want is something to cruise the internet, some mail, watch netflix you don't need a top of the line, super duper latest whiz bang tablet. On the other hand if money is no object I'd go Android and Samsung's are pretty good. Plus's include more in and out ports and, for me, most important the ability to use a micro sd card to vastly increase the available memory. The newest Samsungs have as good or better screen resolution as ipad "retina" though what your going to view at that resolution on a 10" screen beats me. Apple locks you into it's own pocket universe. Good luck getting video or music on or off without itunes (ugh!). Android allows you to play many different music and video formats because the OS can. You can connect it to your PC or take out that sd card and use a card reader with your computer and load your music or videos to your hearts content. The Google Play store may not have the sheer number of apps that Apple boasts but really so what? There are more than enough to do what you want ant many are free of charge.

Now if you want an inexpensive alternative, have a look at Barnes and Noble Nooks. The HD+ color is a 9" full HD tablet whose 32GB version (with that sd card slot to add say another 64GB for around $30 for the card). The penalty, no cameras. The plus, the Google Play store is fully open to you. If you don't like the Nook interface for the cost of a 16GB card, some downloads, and following a 1,2,3 recipe you can load on the Cyanogen mod and have a full android tablet without any rubbish add-ons.

Which tablet to get.
Jul 4, 2014 6:50AM PDT

I did a lot of research before buying a new tablet. I compared the reviews for many different ones...Windows tabs, Android and Apple. They all had good points and bad points. I ended up getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet, and have not looked back. They only thing that is not good about the Galaxy Note Tab, is all the unneeded apps that take up space on the system storage. These tablets can be rooted to rid them of bloatware, and I may try that in the future, but I really like the Galaxy Note Tab. It is quick, just the right size for me, it's fun, plays movies, music, has a great camera, the screen is beautiful, and with the S-Pen, taking notes in a snap.
And...it's much lower in cost then the iPad.

My Personal choice...

I'd go for the Samsung, either Galaxy or Note but that's just a personal preference and refusal to pay the Apple premium. I like the option of a stylus too. Sorting out which Galaxy is a whole other debate!

Others to consider might be the Google Nexus or Amazon Kindle Fire.
