Question

Samsung Galaxy Ace and text to speech help needed.

May 12, 2012 10:02PM PDT

Forgive me if this seems a simple question but I'm new to smart phones.

Had this phone a week and am very satisfied with it, it has gingerbread android and does all I ask of it but for one thing.

I can't get text to speech to work, it has only one default, Pico TTS, I can listen to the example and Install voice data is greyed out so it must be there.

There is nothing I can find in the manual to say how to use it, I don't really need TTS as I have good eyesight but it's bugging me that I cant make it work.

I would expect that there would be a way to speak a text message but it is beyond me.

I've e-mailed Samsung but they don't seem to understand the problem, maybe I just can't use TTS on this phone.

Any help gratefully received.

Mike

Clarification Request
Did you try any other apps?
May 13, 2012 12:02AM PDT

Your question is good but I think you need to try other apps. Your question also highlights that Samsung is just like Dell. That is they are using Google's Android and when there is an OS or App issue just like Dell, you know they won't know.

Google is the new Microsoft.

Answer
Make sure the engine is Enabled

Hopefully you have already solved this problem, but just in case here's a possible solution.

You may need to Enable the voice. If you scroll down more from where the "Install Voice Data" is grayed out, you will get to a list of Text-To-Speech engines. Make sure the checkbox next to any engines you want enabled is checked. In your case, this would maybe just be Pico, but you still have to enable it.

Thanks for trying but I've given up on this.

The Default Engine is Pico and is selected, language is set to English (UK) and selected, Pico TTS settings give English(UK), (US), etc. but are all greyed out.

I admit defeat.
