samsung fridge high power consumption

Product: Samsung Side by Side Fridge RS1J FURS
Purchased: 2007

Our Samsung side by side fridge runs about 80% of the time. Because of worries about its energy use I connected it to apower meter for a week and it turns out the machine uses about 1800 kwh per year. This is 3.5 times the figure that Samsung advertised at the time of purchase; it had an A label and rated annual energy use of 515kwh.

We called Samsung and they sent a mechanic. He did not touch the machine and said there was nothing wrong with it because it cooled properly. Afterwards we have contacted Samsung through our vendor, but they also said that this type of energy use was not abnormal and ther is nothing they can do for us.

After that I had a look at the machine myself. The compressor is running very hot. Apart from that the only thing a noticed was a flattened bend in a copper tube leading to the evaporator in the freezer compartiment.

Does anybody have a similar experience with this type of fridge? Do all Samsung Side by Sid fridges run almost continuously? Any suggestions on how to reduce the energy use are welcome.
