Samsung DVD-HD841 Audio problems

Dec 29, 2004 4:05AM PST

For Christmas I got the Samsung HD-841 DVD player that upconverts DVD's for HD. It's attached to my Samsung HL-P5063W TV. The picture is phenomenal, but I'm having a problem with the audio.

I have a Denon receiver. The DVD player is connected using a Monster Optical Cable. My old DVD player was a great Sony, connected using the same optical cable. When the Sony was connected, I got Dolby Digital Sound. When the Samsung is connected, I'm getting Dolby Pro Logic sound. Not the same. The Samsung DVD player is Dolby Digital compliant, so does anyone have any suggestions?? I've tried adjusting everything on the Denon and Samsung DVD player - still no Dolby Digital.

No Kinks

light wont go round corners. No bends or kinks.
I would try video 2 port.
Then aux. Maybe even unplug the denon for 30 minutes. Make sure optical is set for input, auto, run test for speaker connetions in the denon.
Then try 5.1 cables. Lastly choose 5.1 on the dvd.

Nope - still doesn't work

Optical cables are just fiber optics, which can bend (unless it's a 180 degree bend). My Monster cable hasn't moved, I simply took one DVD player off the shelf and put the new one in, and connected it.

Optical cables don't go in Video 2 ports or Aux ports, they go into the Optical Cable ports on the back of the Denon. Nothing has changed except the new DVD player. Every time you start the Denon up it automatically scans for the input. All speaker connections are fine. Everything is working normally - except it says Dolby Pro Logic not Dolby Digital.

Coming out all 6 speakers

Pro Logic may be that, but the sound is coming out all 6 of my speakers (front, center, rear surround, rear center). But it sounds different compared to the Dolby Digital. I gave Samsung a call because I had given up and they said to take it back because it sounds like the optical port is defective. So I'm going to do that today and if it still doesn't work, I guess that's the way it just is.

You could try the 5.1 ports.

New DVD player worked

Returned the old DVD player to Best Buy, got a new one, works fine now. When I called Samsung they said it sounded like a defective optical port. When I got the new one home, I plugged in the optical cable, and boom, Dolby Digital.
