Samsung DLP Vs. Mitsu DLP Vs. Sony LCD

Jan 16, 2005 11:08AM PST

I've been doing some research into TV's as I'm preparing to purchase one in the next few weeks. I've narrowed it down to the following models:

Samsung HL-P5085W - DLP
Mitsubishi WD-52525 - DLP
Sony KDF-55XS955

If you have any thoughts or experiences with any of the above models please let me know. I'm all ears.

Thanks!

RE: Samsung DLP Vs. Mitsu DLP Vs. Sony LCD

First off all 3 tv's are generally good, it really comes down to features and benefits. If you want the best DLP has to offer both the Samsung and Mits are great, however, the Samsung is just a "monitor" where the Mits is a all in one solution. Also, if you have a lot of equipment, you will have to buy some sort of audio rack for the Samsung because there isn't anywhere to put things, they do sell a stand that wraps around it but it makes it look awfully silly. The biggest thing is the Mits uses a 7 segment color wheel and it makes a HUGE difference in picture quality. The Sony has a nice picture as well but in my opinion DLP has a much sharper, accurate picture. I just can't get past the screen door affect on these tv's, but again, that is my opinion. LCD-RPG will give you better depth perception but DLP will give you truer black level, color accuracy. DLP can potentially give you rainbow affect but on the newer sets it isn't much of an issue. All in all, every technology has its flaws and it is up to the consumer to make an educated decision with the help of a sales person.

How about on Non HD programs?
Jan 17, 2005 9:43AM PST

One of my concerns was the Samsung pedestial design because of the reasons you pointed out. Another concern, which perhaps someone can help me out with, is how these TV's look when watching NON-HDTV programs? Is any one of the 3 better than the others at that?

Not too many analog signals look all that great on digital tv's. It depends if you have cable or sat. Sat is all digital all the time so it will look ok but digital cable still has a lot of analog programming, in most cases any channel under 100, and this signal is usually less than VCR quality. I do think the Mits does this better than any, it has what they call their AMVP2 processor which is basically a line quadrupaler (sp), which make non HD signals look as digital as they can. Hope this helps.

Mit. and non-HDTV
Feb 1, 2005 10:54PM PST

I went through the same, detailed research on HDTV's and decided on the Mit 52725. The picture is incredible, especially in HD. What I was most surprised about was how beautiful non-HD programs look.

I'd take a serious look at the Mit.

Interesting, I've been researching the same 3 models. I've decided to go w/ the Mitsu for several reasons including those in the other postings to this thread. Was wondering if you've made your final decision? Also, have you decided where you'll purchase it from? That's what I'm looking into next.

I bought the Mit 525 and will have it delivered tomorrow. I got it at Best Buy for about $2,650. Haven't seen it cheaper. Get the 4 yr performance plan since it covers the bulb which will surely go out once or twice in that period. I'll post my comments after using it a week or two.

Mit525 Update
Feb 7, 2005 1:18AM PST

Congrats, sounds like you got a great deal! I made the purchase on Sat (2/5). Got it from a local specialty store for $2800. That was the lowest I'd seen from an authorized dealer. I also bought a Denon AV Receiver and DVD player. It will be delivered in a week or so. I'm in no hurry as we have the room completely torn apart for repainting. Let me know how you like it so far. Have you watched HD on it, if so, what is your source (air, cable sat)?

Get the Sony
Feb 2, 2005 11:45PM PST

Last year, I bought and returned to Circuit City two Samsung DLP HLN507W TV sets. The reason? FAN NOISE! The picture of this and subsequent DLP sets made by this manufacturer is little short of amazing; however, the glaring oversight of failure to rectify such a simple problem as fan noise in these and newer model DLP sets is nothing short of amazing. If they can use a postage stamp sized chip with a million tiny mechanical mirrors to produce a vibrant picture with incredible clarity, how on earth could they forget to fix such a low tech problem as fan noise that can easily be heard twenty feet away? Long live LCD!

DOn't buy YET!

1st off, go with the Samsung, I am getting it later this month. LCD just is not as good. Mits is good 2, but at the end of feb samsung will be releasing the 88 series dlp pedistal. Which will look exatcly like the 85, just instead with a 1080p resolution, and 5000:1 contrast.
