Samsung DLP TV : HL-T5076S image issues

Jun 16, 2010 12:31AM PDT

I have had the Samsung DLP for two years now. Its been an excellent TV with great image. Four days ago the image became skewed slightly. There is a bowing of the image whereas the bottom, mostly the bottom center of the screen has dropped below the screen. On any station with a ticker such as CNBC or ESPN it 3/4rs of the ticker is below the bottom of the screen. I have played with all the settings on the TV and the Cable box. Any thoughts?

killaarmy100,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue.

This is a service issue, and can be addressed by service if you call 800-SAMSUNG. Setting the cable box to 16x9 and adjusting the picture size on the TV should have fixed this, but it may be that a service inspection would be necessary if the symptom persists.

The bowing is more pronounced today being wider at the bottom and slimmer towards the top. I called Samsung and they gave me an outsourced service company who said the charge would be $60 to walk in the door, and a minimum of $210 to fix any and all problems not including parts. Seemed obnoxious imho. I'd rather open the TV myself and adjust the bulb direction myself if anyone has a link to how to properly open the TV....

I have exactly the same problem with my set (same model as yours and about 2 years old). I figure I could purchase a manual and adjust it myself but thought I would check the blogs first. Have you solved the problem? If so - how? I've heard there is a code you can enter through the remote that opens a more detailed menu which might allow other picture adjustments. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks

Jackandson,

A few things on the topic...

1. The bulb is set and doesn't move. (For killaarmy100). It's not like the old CRT projectors where you'd align the RGB lamps individually and calibrate the alignment. It's a white light source, and isn't the cause of bowing.

2. Additionally, there is a service menu, but it's not easy to read, and I recommend not going in there. Two reasons for this: 1) More people fall to 'experimenting' and can break their TV. Everyone here swears that they "never would", and then say that they "might have done something" when the TV doesn't turn on after exiting the menu. I hate to see it, and it's more common than not. It's hidden for a reason. 2) There's nothing that will adjust bowing on a DMD (DLP) chip. That, like the lamp, also is set.

The problem is either in the screen itself or the physical setting of the television that might cause the screen to bow. Some people place heavy objects on top of the TV, and that can cause the screen to bow at the top. I'm assuming both of you have a flat and level surface, but check.

It's just my experience, but in most cases, it's the screen. Someone might have different information, and I don't mind that being posted - (Everyone's entitled, right?) Happy But in this case, I think if you're going to do a DIY project with your TV, start at the screen, rather than trying to move the DMD board or lamps - which aren't designed to be moved or adjusted.

If it was me, that's where I'd start.
