Samsung DLP Tantus

Recently was connected to Verizon Vios. Tech plugged into the 1080i and could only get HD channels. Switched to the 480i plugs and couldn't get the HD channels. Said the TV should recognize the differing signals and adjust accordingly. Said to find out if there was a setting that might turn that capability on.
Got any suggestions?
