Samsung Blu-Ray Player BD-C5500 Firmware 1015.2 withdrawn?

Jul 20, 2010 10:05PM PDT

Hi,

I own a Samsung Blu Ray player BD-C5500 and noticed a couple of days ago that there was a new firmware available for download on Samsung's support page - Firmware 1015.2
I installed this to the player and all has been fine, so far.
I now notice that this firmware has disappeared from the Samsung site and has been replaced with the previous firmware 1013.4
Presumably this is because 1015.2 was not ready for release.
My problem is I cannot downgrade back to 1013.4 as my player is stating it has the most up to date firmware!
Is there any way to downgrade, or alternatively will the new firmware be reissued anytime soon?
Regards
Scott

sk528,

Other regions may have various firmware versions. So, now I see why 1016.1 is available - because it's available in Australia.

If people are asking specific questions about firmware, it's always helpful if you specify which region you're inquiring from. Otherwise, it gets confusing and I make statements based on what information I have in the U.S. only.

How to allow BD-C5500C to pick up where you left off?
Oct 12, 2010 2:36PM PDT

Hi, my sister has this player and is very irritated that when she turns the player off and then starts it up again it never picks up where she left off in the movie. She never finishes a movie in one go and needs this very basic feature.

1. Is this feature added with the latest firmware (I see 1015.4 on the Samsung website)
2. Or is it already available and she just has to turn it on somehow?

Anyone know?

I'm trying to help her figure this out from 2000 miles away.

Thanks,
Chris

Does this work with Java based disks?
Oct 13, 2010 8:36AM PDT

Hi, I've done some research and it appears Java based Blu-ray disks are often a problem. Are you SURE you have no problems with these disks? I'm not sure how to determine if a disk is a java one or not.

Did you used to have problems with an older firmware version and now you don't? If you never had problems then that is likely to be due to the disks you're using.

Resume fine..
Oct 13, 2010 10:39AM PDT

..for all my SD/BR dvds

reading here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD-J seems to be fairly new on the market. I don't have any BR-J titles listed so I can't tell if it works.

Actually I did not use resume with this few month old player yet until I read this thread - it made me curious coz I consider resume a basic functionality every player should have working.

Firmware upgrade

The firmware link you provided does not show any firmware at all. It says there is "no firmware available for this model".

I chose "U.S." and my model - not Australia
Oct 13, 2010 11:18AM PDT

I thought I mentioned my region - I am in the US region and I am quite sure that I chose the proper region - however "briefly" - at some point when 16.1 was available on the site.

As far as I know, I am not having any specific problems with version 16.1, but I simply chose U.S. and/or America as my region and chose the proper model and, as I said, 16.1 was avaiable and I downloaded and installed it.

I did not, to my knowledge, go anywhere near any Australia sites, nor did I choose Australia as my country.

If there is any way, in the relate firmware .RUF file that I can confirm which region it came from, please let me know, and I will verify.

Thanks again.

tnjman,

Understood, but I don't know where or when that firmware went up.

I don't have any information in the file that would note the correct region, and I'm not aware of the file having that information either.

That said, I have to ask, as some people see a higher number on the firmware than what is in their player, and deduct that "a different region got a better firmware", which is not always the case. And people install the wrong one.

You've noted that the 1016.4 was the latest at one point, but I'm not aware of that being posted. I just don't know.

Thx, it definitely was posted, I NEVER install non-US stuff
Oct 15, 2010 12:39PM PDT

No, i never go by "highest = best" - I only install it if I drill down to the U.S. on your site and it has the latest for my specific region.

I'm afraid to install anything that is not specifically for my region.
If I did install a version from some other region, it certainl was NOT intentiona.
Please suggest to your techs/engineers that they name the versions BY THE SPECIFIC REGION; i.e., AUS_1016.1 wouold be very nice; and USA_1015.4 and so forth.

That way, we would NEVER make a mistake on possibly grabbing the wrong version.
Better still would be 1016.1AUS and 1015.4USA - and that way, the firmware version would show up on the player screen - this also makes it easier on your engineers to troubleshoot in case we accidentally grab a version from the wrong region.

Next time, when I see a new rev posted on USA region, I will "screen-shot" the specific drill-down location, so that you can see where it originated. Of course, AUS and USA are sometimes transposed, so it could be an honest mistake on my part as well. Also, if a person "thinks" that he chose a certain "drop-down," sometimes the drop-down is not completely selected - thus, you can "think" that you chose USA, but if the drop-down selection never happened properly, then you may be getting the wrong version.

Thanks again for all the clarification.

tnjman,

I'll be happy to pass that suggestion up. It's a good one.

In the meantime, if you're having trouble with your player, call 800-SAMSUNG and see about having it serviced. If you're not able to get satisfaction, ask for a transaction number and post it here. I'll see if I can at least help you get back to where you want to be with your player.

Thx HDTech, BD Player works ok except BlockBuster & net test

Thx HDTech, BD Player works ok except BlockBuster & net test.
I don't care about BlockBuster and, since every other app is fine, I'm good with that. Even before I did any firmware upgrades, BB did not work or may have worked one time (honestly, I don't recall that it ever successfully worked).

Same with the Samsung "Network Test." Initially, before any firmware updates, it only worked maybe once or twice; and the other times, it fails and YET, all apps, including Internet TV, can use the network just fine.

I have not yet tried to "Reset" my network settings again and then let them auto-populate again, and then see if the network test works - I may try that one day.

Thanks again.

Firmware Verification...
Oct 15, 2010 4:25PM PDT

there seems to be a brief firmware verification before it actually installs - by this alone I would trust it is impossible to flash a foreign firmware even it is the same player model!?

at least I hope I am right

That's a an excellent point!
Oct 16, 2010 11:16AM PDT

From what I described on this chain of messages, I had what the original poster had: a FROZEN "yes/no" screen when the BD player tried to upgrade over Internet.
It would not let me choose YES and would not let me choose NO.

Samsung should definitely give an EXTRA verification step, saying something like, "I am about to upgrade your firmware from n.nn.nn to n.nn2.nn - do you want to continue? Yes/No" - that would give an added layer of protection to us (the customers).

Granted, if the "Yes/No" option worked, I think that would do the trick.
But I now have my BD player set to NOT notify me for updates, so I think I will leave all of this in a "manual" mode and not rely on 'automatic network updates.'
