If the unit isn't working properly, I'd recommend calling 800-SAMSUNG and sending the unit in for repair. It sounds like something is definitely malfunctioning, and if the firmware update didn't fix it, it could be a hardware issue.
My BD-1590 does this from time to time. Nothing fixes the problem. I have tried powering on and off using the remote and the front panel. I have tried removing power and restoring power. Sometimes the problem goes away by itself. I had this problem before I downloaded the firmware updates and still have the problem with the latest firmware installed. Note that I have also seen the machine freeze with a status display of "OPEN". Other folks have observed similar problems. See http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=97667&page=3.
Note that this problem occurs when the machine does not have a DVD in it at all.
