Samsung A650 and Sony PS3

Oct 23, 2008 1:58PM PDT

I have owned both of these products since June of this year. I have had problems with the tv while hooked up via hdmi with the ps3. While playing games or on the home screen of the ps3 I randomly get static display, black screen, input not found, and the right side of the tv looks like a barcode, along with audio static but not at all instances. This does not happen at any set interval only randomly. I have been through 3 different hdmi cables. I have replaced via warranty with sony the ps3. I still have this problem. I cannot determine if this is the tv or ps3 that is the problem. Or if it is just the signals getting crossed between the two. I have used the different hdmi ports as well. This does not happen with other componenets hooked up hdmi either. I have found others that have the same problem on different forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have already contacted samsung and they were going to replace the main circuit board without even coming to look at it first. I dont want my tv opened up if it is just a setting or two I need to address.

Thanks

regarding the firmware, i got the link from another cnet thread, the file is here:

http://tiny.cc/9tAyS

^that is just a shortened link to the samsung site, the URL was too long and the whole thing wasnt clickable so i had to use tinyurl... if you dont trust that link (its the internet there are bad people out there i wouldnt blame ya!) then just go to samsungs site, search for your model number, click on downloads and the click the firmware tab, it will link you to the newest (public) revision.

it downloads as a self extracting EXE, extract it to your USB flash drive and put the flash drive in the USB port on your TV, then go to menu - setup - software update and it will search for the USB drive, find it and start the update, the tv will turn itself on and off at least once during the process, just dont shut it off or remove the flash drive!

as for the HDMI cable, the first one that didnt work was a cheap one that i got from a local bargain store, as i was told that HDMI cables either work or they dont and that quality was a non issue. this is obviously incorrect. the cable i am using now that works is here:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=31278&vpn=HDMI-MM-10&manufacture=Ion%20Cables

here is the description: Ion Cables HDMI-MM-10 HDMI M/M 10FT Digital High Quality Video Cable

ill keep checking this thread, hope you guys have some luck!

by the way, the PS3 upscales dvd's and now in 1920x1080 @ 60hz dvds and even .AVI files off my computer look really really good. now i can finally start trying some calibration and such!

A650 and PS3 issue resolved
Jan 8, 2009 12:44PM PST

Was having the same problem with a Samsung A650 / PS3 with an expensive, but 1-year old cable, on all HDMI ports. Did a bit of research and found a well-rated, inexpensive HDMI v1.3 cat 2 cable on Amazon. Purchased the cable, arrived earlier this week, and have experienced no further issues. 1080p working as I would expect.

Here is a link to the cable i purchased . . .

Feb 8, 2009 2:40AM PST

kk612, do you get random static when you first boot up PS2 games(or any PS3) on your PS3 with your new HDMI cables? This seems to be the only time when i get the static.

Static . . . Me too
Feb 12, 2009 7:42AM PST

I just got a LN40A650 with what looks liek the newest firmware, and just noticed this issue you guys have been having. Ive had the TV about a week or so.
It started after I played FFXI on the PS3. The PS3 was set to upscale fullscreen.
When I quite back from the actual game to the playonline screen, which maybe 480i res, not sure, the TV got static lines all across and static sound out of the speakers. I swicthed the source and then back again and the static on the screen was gone, but the static sound was wtill there. I turned the TV off and back on and it seemed to clear up, but noticed after i shut the PS3 off the static was still coming from the TV.
Iam using the Sony HDMI 49.00 cable, which Im pretty sure is v1.3.
Then this morning, I turned the TV on while it was still dark in the room, and noticed before the picture actuall came on there were faint static lines, I then got close to the TV and noticed I could hear static sound from the speakers. I couldnt notice the static on the picture after the picture came on though.I always turn the PS3 on and then the TV, so not sure if thats anything. I have been using HDMI2 labeled Blu-Ray. I had labeled it PC once but changed it back. I wonder if it has something to do with PS2 game resolution. Anyway I hope changing to port HDMI 1 will fix it. Didnt some units come with some sort of HDMI ceramic filter deal to put on the HDMI cable?

Samsung 650 seiries TV and PS3 equal endless headaches
Mar 14, 2009 6:31AM PDT

I recently bought a ps3 and a Samsung 46" 650 series TV. Like everyone else on this thread I been having a lot of problems with the "Mode not supported message". I am using a HDMI 1.3 Catagory 1 cable to connect which may be the problem, but rig would work fine for a random period of time then the pictures goes to the "Mode Not supported" box. From all the info that I gathered on the web it seems like something happenes on the PS3 when the games switched from game play to a cutscene that will cause the signal to go out of sync. Some people have been having good results with the $80 monster cables, I will try it out with those cables. As it stands I would recommend not getting a Samsung 650 TV to use with their ps3, and Samsungs tech support is adamantly denying that is is a widespread problem and they have no idea how to fix it. Sony's tech support is even worse.

Samsung LNT3253H/L& PS3
Mar 23, 2009 2:03AM PDT

I bought my Samsung two years ago and it worked well enough with my PS3 for over 1 1/2 years. Then I had to move the PS3 to a better TV where it really worked great. Before, the sound would turn off mid game and I had to turn everything off and on again. No problem on the Marantz TV I had switched to. Then when I had to move it back to the Samsung I received the "Mode Not Supported" message. I was using the exact same cable and settings. The only difference was that the PS3 had updated several times in its absence. I spoke to Samsung and after talking to four different Tech Reps, the first three claiming it was the PS3's fault, the final one said they had a firmware update to fix the problem. She sent me the update and after installing it, nothing is different. It still does not work. I am with all the other posters, I spent mega bucks on this TV which was touted as a "Gamer's" TV when I bought it. I would not recommend a Samsung to anyone after this.

$80 Monster cable fixes the problem
Mar 23, 2009 5:12AM PDT

Well I dont know what it is, but since my last post I bought the $80+ Monster 800 seires 6.4gb bandwidth HDMI cable and it worked flawlessly so far. My old cable was about $30 and it was from Nyko, it worked with the TV on and off for about 1 week then it stopped working all together and cannot get out of "mode not supported" no matter what I tried. I still use the Nyko cable to connect my laptop to the tv to watch movies and there has been no problems with it. So maybe the PS3 is just needs a very high quality cable, they think since you are spending so much money on the hardware why not get them for another $80-$100 just for 1 cable.
