Samsung A650 and Sony PS3

Oct 23, 2008 1:58PM PDT

I have owned both of these products since June of this year. I have had problems with the tv while hooked up via hdmi with the ps3. While playing games or on the home screen of the ps3 I randomly get static display, black screen, input not found, and the right side of the tv looks like a barcode, along with audio static but not at all instances. This does not happen at any set interval only randomly. I have been through 3 different hdmi cables. I have replaced via warranty with sony the ps3. I still have this problem. I cannot determine if this is the tv or ps3 that is the problem. Or if it is just the signals getting crossed between the two. I have used the different hdmi ports as well. This does not happen with other componenets hooked up hdmi either. I have found others that have the same problem on different forums. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have already contacted samsung and they were going to replace the main circuit board without even coming to look at it first. I dont want my tv opened up if it is just a setting or two I need to address.

Thanks

Very few issues reported
Oct 24, 2008 5:14AM PDT

I checked with service, and this issue isn't widespread, at least not at this point. So I don't have any suggestions or advice to offer, except to see if the TV board switching doesn't fix your solution, which you've already discussed.

Keep us posted! I'm curious to hear the results.

Same Problem here
Feb 14, 2009 3:59PM PST

Not sure if it is exactly the same, but my Samsung LN40A650 is experiencing similar issues. I have had no problems as yet while watching television, but when playing games on my XBOX 360, I will frequently have screen blackouts where the television appears to turn off, then come back on in a few seconds. I've switched my Xbox back and forth from HDMI and normal modes, and this only happens when it is in HD mode. This really bothers me as it was hard for me to justify spending so much money on the tv, and it seems like it doesn't work properly for HD gaming.

same problem, PS3 +HDMI + Samsung 650 = problems
Nov 25, 2008 3:50AM PST

Hello
I'm having the same issue with the Samsung 650. Its random, but it seems to happen more often when the PS3 changes resolution or switches refresh rate. What happens for me is usually one of two possible things.
1) The TV will tell me that there is no signal coming in (I don't recall the exact message it displayed off the top of my head), when there clearly is as it was just playing it a moment ago.
2) It will show static for a few seconds and then switch back to whatever the PS3 is actively showing for a few seconds and repeat this in a cycle.

I tried 3 different HDMI cables so I'm confident that is not the problem. I even bought the extra expensive bonus shielding HDMI cable, and that didn't help. I don't have any other electronics around so I don't think there is interference.

Usually I can fix the problem by switching sources from the PS3 source to a different one. Some times I have to switch 7-8 times before it will stick and play the PS3 output with out any glitches. Some times that's not good enough and I have to unplug the PS3s HDMI cable and plug it into a different port on the TV. Some times that doesn't work either. I've had the best results with turning the TV on first, waiting for it to warm up, setting the source to the PS3 source, then turning on the PS3 in that order. But then any time the PS3 changes rez or refresh rate the problem can kick in again randomly.

I'm running whatever the latest PS3 firmware update is as of this posting.

I'm convinced its a problem with how the TV is processing the HDMI signal. Seems like whatever copy protection happens in decoding the signal gets out of sync and then cascades to a state where it cant process future frames of display output. But that's just a guess on my part.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to fix the problem permanently?

same problem, PS3+HDMI+Samsung 650=problems
Nov 25, 2008 10:51AM PST

I have a 52A650 and a PS3 connected to it. I have not experienced the issue that you have described. First thing I would ask is if you have upgraded the firmware on your PS3. Even though I purchased my PS3 back in September, I connected my PS3 to my network and did an upgrade to the latest version firmware. Do you have this problem with certain games or all games? Have you seen this problem while playing Blu-Ray movies also? I know quite a few PS3 games are 720p native resolution. If the problem does not show up when you play a blu-ray movie, the it may related to a problem with processing of 720p on either the PS3 or the 650. I would check to make sure you are running the most current firmware on both the PS3 and the 650.

Good luck

Latest Firmware
Nov 26, 2008 6:16AM PST

I contacted our service department and noted this issue.

The lastest firmware update should have resolved this problem. If you haven't already, download and install the latest firmware found here:

(LN52A650)
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDown.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=lcdtv&model_nm=LN52A650A1F&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=FM&vType=L&prd_ia_cd=02010100&disp_nm=LN52A650

If you have a different model, let me know and I'll post the link for your individual firmware.

More PS3/HDMI issues
Nov 30, 2008 3:00PM PST

I bought my ln46a650 just over two weeks ago and I've had the same problems with my PS3. I get random "ticks" where the screen goes to static for a few frames and the audio also has a static hit along with the video. Sometimes this happens frequently and other times it won't happen at all during use. However yesterday the PS3 went absolutely nuts with the stuff, the screen went black a few times with a loss of audio and a few times when going to black the TV displays "Mode not Supported". Each time the PS3/TV went back to normal the TV info box on the upper right hand side came up. This has happened using two seperate HDMI cables and two different inputs.

I have my cable box hooked up via HDMI and have had no issues, my XBOX has never messed up like the PS3, however a few times when I turn it on and select the input on the TV, it gives me the "Mode not Supported" sign. Today when I played a DVD on the XBOX it gave me the "MNS", then when the picture appeared, the XBOX had a little icon that said "Secure HDCP Link Restored". What does that mean, and is it also a problem with the TV?

After I got the TV I downloaded the latest firmware update from the website but I already had a newer version installed on my TV.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to change the output settings on the game station to see if that helps. Does it?

Yeah, actually yesterday before my post I made sure the PS3 was set for HDMI and it had one of it's little a/v hiccups within a few minutes.

Update
Dec 6, 2008 12:42PM PST

Well, I exchanged my PS3 and after about 2 hours of use I had no problems. Then tonight I turned it on and got a "Mode Not Supported" message, then about 10 minutes later it went to black and the TV's info box came up displaying the input, resolution and frame rate... then a few minutes later I got my first of several audio/video hits with the static pop.

Any suggestions on what the problem is??? Thursday is the end of the 30 day return period with Best Buy and if this TV is a dud I need to do something about it.

Your call...
Dec 7, 2008 7:41AM PST

If you've tried to install the latest firmware update, swapped out the PS3 and still get the problem, I might consider exchanging the unit. I'd rather you be happy than anything else.

Firmware
Dec 10, 2008 1:49PM PST

I haven't updated the firmware yet because the firmware out of the box was a newer version. Would installing the latest firmware update from the samsung site hurt my TV if it is older than the one currently on my TV?

I went ahead and bought an extended warranty, so I'm not in freak out mode anymore.

Thanks again for the help.

Also, is this a U.S. set, or a Canadian set?

Problem with a 650 40" tv

How often does this happen?

Still have problems with the latest firmware
Dec 15, 2008 5:42AM PST

I updated my firmware and am still having the same problem.

Recapping, lets say I'm watching a DVD or a blueray movie on my playstation 3, when it exits out of playing the movie to the playstation main menu, seems like its a 50% chance for the TV to tell me there is no signal or that its an unsupported mode. But then if I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it into a different port on the TV, it works.

Is there any way for me to tell the TV to try again? Other then physically getting up and unpluging the cable? I have had some sucess with changing sources and then switching back to the playstation 3 source, but that doesn't seem to work consistently.

Reading other posts on this.
Dec 15, 2008 5:53AM PST

It appears some find they move to component connections, set the PS3 to 720 and it works. I know some will not accept workarounds but I'm getting used to workarounds.

A650 and PS3
Dec 19, 2008 11:57AM PST

I just got my LN52A650 and it is awesome, however when I connected the PS3 and set it to 1080p. I got the noted error "Mode Not Supported" it works fine in 1080i. But I paid the extra $1000 bucks for 120hz and 1080p. I see here the the new firmware might fis a problem. But my version is at 2008.9 and the site has 2007.0 I am in the US with a US model. What should I do? I can live with 1080i, but this bugs me not being able to do 1080p. Any ideas?

Same issue here!! (46a650+ps3+hdmi = problem)
Dec 26, 2008 10:06AM PST

I just got my 46 samsung and PS3 for the holidays. First two days were fine, and then all of sudden, I started getting this problem - I get blank screen with no sound, and "Mode not supported" randomly. I tried upgrading the firmware, but it is already running the latest, and my PS3 is running the latest as well.

I was thinking about exchanging PS3, but from what I read here, that doesn't work. I guess, I will try exchanging the TV.

Any update/news would be appreciated. Thanks.

Same issue here (ln52a650+hdmi+ps3=problem)
Dec 27, 2008 11:42PM PST

I am having the same problem as mentioned on this forum. The ps3 would start up ok. Then I get a blank screen with no sound my tv then post a message that "Mode not supported." (It usually makes a popping sound before it goes blank.)Then the screen would reappear then go the same process all over again. I am pretty sure it is the tv because when I connect the each of the Hdmi ports in the back this problem appears, but when I connect it to side (hdmi 4) everything is ok. I updated the firmware for both the ps3 and my tv. no luck.

- Collapse -
yeah.. i have exactly the same issues as you, few101
Dec 28, 2008 2:56AM PST

The symptoms seem to be identical. Out of 4 hdmi ports, 1 or 2 seem to be working ok (or better than the others.)
And as someone mentioned earlier, Turning on TV first definitely makes a difference. If I turn on the signal source first(PS3), and then TV, the problem seems to happen more often.

I am wondering if future firmware will fix this issue, or if I should return this tv. The quality is amazing when it's working!

There is a fix, but it is quite odd.
Dec 28, 2008 3:26AM PST

I had the exact same problem with my PS3 and my LN52A650. It would work just fine in 1080i, but not 1080p. The fix is definitely a little weird. I wouldn't have done this otherwise, but I was able to get a top of the line Monster cable HDMI cable for really cheap. Guess what? The monster cable completely eliminated the problem. That was, until my TV went into the infinite on/off loop of death.

The turning on the tv suggestion worked
Dec 29, 2008 6:14AM PST

Thanks! That suggestion worked with 2 of the hdmi ports. The other 2 ports it worked but on a few occasions the same issue happen (but less frequently).

Update
Dec 29, 2008 12:19PM PST

As the originator of this particular thread dealing with the Samsung 6 series and PS3 incompatibility I would like to just give an update to my status. All in all this thread has had some great discussions unfortunately little help for my problem. Everyone is stating they are having the same or close to the same issues as I have since the purchase of my TV and PS3 together earlier this year. Samsung is saying this is not a widespread issue so please contact them directly via the 800 number given in your manual to make them aware. I am down to the last of my patience with these two components, but really what do you do? I have now changed out all cables, used every port available on the TV, tried to turn the TV on then the PS3 and vice versa, exchanged the PS3, used others PS3's, tried configuring the PS3 to many different settings for video and audio. It seems like this is a wide spread issue that Samsung might want to look more into during their testing. Also I will be posting another discussion for the PS3 discussing the same issue and see if Sony
would like to partake in helping to fix this problem. Thanks to all and good luck!

i am glad to hear there are people with the same problems - i am not alone. I just bought my 52" 650 series this weekend, and got a PS3 for xmas... so far i have watched a few blu-rays on it and they looked awesome at 1920x1080@24hz. i am an amateur at this stuff so i dont know if 1920x1080@24hz is 1080p or what? anyways while trying to find a fix for a bluray i had (Imax: Galapagos) that wouldnt play at anything other than 720i, i found a site that said to change display output on the hdmi, so i tried to change it to 1080p and the tv says "Mode Not Supported". 1080i works fine tho. anyways i have the newest ps3 firmware, and have 2004.1 on the tv i believe, so i am updating to the newest. and will try another HDMI cable in a different port and update you guys with my progress... i HOPE!!!! that samsung gets this figured out, i didnt spend this much money on a otherwise beautiful tv to have it not be 100% functional!

hope this helps, ill be checking back here for updates.. if anyone wants to get in contact with me, please send me a private message or post in here your email.
