Question

Samsung 840 EVO 250GB ssd keeps disappearing

Jan 30, 2014 10:02PM PST

The drive had been working without any problems for a couple months and now it keeps disappearing on me. The only way to get it to reappear is to unplug it entirely from the motherboard and plug it back in. Even if I do get to reappear, it will only be visible in windows for a minute or two before its gone again. Here are my rig specs:

It is under warranty. Thankfully there is nothing critical on the drive, I use it for my Steam account. It will be annoying to sort out my Skyrim mods again, but I'll live.

Have you

flashed the latest firmware onto it? There is a reason SSD makers keep updating their firmware. Also don't forget to turn off auto defrag to reduce wear.

Good suggestion

But disconnect any other Samsung drive during that update. Just in case.

I attempted to flash

the latest firmware on it but it came up with an error and didn't finish. At that time the drive did not disappear from windows until several minutes later. If I can get the drive to stay active long enough I intend to attempt deleting the partition and then retrying the firmware updater.

you have a gazillion bytes of RAM (seems like that to me!) zero out paging files for all SSDs to also conserve life. Read up about TLC for SSDs and you'll be a happier camper.

Didn't even think about that

thanks for the tip. I'm sure it will help my system disk that is on the Crucial ssd.
