samsung 650 and xbox 360 Lag? Ghosting? Help me!

Mar 8, 2009 1:20PM PDT

I purchased a 46 inch samsung 650 a few months back and have been having problems with the response time during gameplay.I can't say it is ghosting, but it might be. I don't know. I replaced the cables with HDMI and have had no luck. This problem is noticable to me because I also own a 32 inch aquos which i a few years old now and I do not have the same issues with it. Is it my TV or the settings? What input should I be using? The auto motion plus just makes it jumpy, so I need help. Has anyone who plays Halo 3 on their 650 experienced these problems? I need help!

Picture lag

You'll want to make sure that game mode is enabled. This should cut down on the lag you are experiencing

I figured it out

So here is the low down. This samsung has a feature that is called auto motion plus. The tv runs at 60 hertz all the time. What the auto motion plus does is software guesses where the movement will be next and inserts a frame in between the current one and the next in an attempt to create smoother motion. The problem is when the xbox runs at 60 hertz and the tv runs at 60 hertz, the software has trouble guessing where the movement is going and creates blurring in spots of high motion. (This is a software driven 120 herts) Halo 3, which is the game I play on xbox is nothing but motion, hence the problem. This feature is awesome for movies and sports, but horrible for gaming. I contacted samsung who told me that this is a software issue which they have never encountered before. I opted to trade in my tv for a bravia z4100 with hardware that runs at a true 120 hertz. I receive it tomorrow, so I will keep my fingers crossed that the problem doesn't re-emerge. Thanks!

120Hz...

shazam8683,

The game station will send it in a 60Hz, but the panel itself will always show 120Hz. So that upconversion from 60Hz to 120Hz does take processing, which may result in some lag. The game mode is an option that allows you to reduce the additional picture processing, however this is often at a slight cost of picture quality.

Keep me posted. I'd be curious to know how that model runs at a true 120Hz. I'm not aware of any true 120Hz sources available in the consumer market today. As a result, picture processing is inherent in consumer electronics today.

The tech is right, there are no purely 120 hertz driven lcds, however, when I faced what could be the same issue, the samsung rep i spoke to on the phone said that it was a software shortcoming. He didn't say there was something wrong with the software or the set itself, he said that is typical to this software. I asked if there was a software update that would fix the problem and he said no. I loved the picture quality on the 650, but the software sucked for gaming. It sounds to me your problem might me different, but call samsung and ask. The best picture in the world isn't worth it to me if the tv doesn't do everything else it should do. You might be able to fix yours with a calibration. BUT keep track of the time you have to return/exchange the set because you don't want to get stuck with a tv you aren't happy with.
