Samsung 60" UN60HU8550FXZA TV

Jul 4, 2018 8:54AM PDT

I realize that this model is discontinued, but I would like to discourage
anyone from buying it used for anything other than a throwaway price.

Cost ~$3300 when we bought it 4 years ago. Very nice until this month, when it developed fine horizontal lines across the screen. Repairman said it would cost $1400 to replace the screen and it wasn't worth doing. We paid ~$2/day to watch this TV. It's got a nice picture, but not that nice. Theory has it that you can replace the main board and a cable for what is probably an acceptable price, but apparently that wasn't possible.

Samsung said the warranty was only a year and gave us the number of the authorized repair facility. We own a lot of Samsung stuff, but we'll never buy another Samsung item again. Something this expensive (I recently bought a good 2002 Corolla for less than this) ought to last longer than four years.

The clue about life span

Is not in the price you pay but the maker warranties. If it was expected to last many years, why is the warranty just 1 year?

Many makers have 1 year warranties so it's upsetting to most that most of these gear is just what we call a "5 year design.," Smart phones are also such things.
