Samsung 40'' giving horizontal black bars at top and bottom

by Avk999 / November 27, 2010 11:49 AM PST

I have samsung LN40B530. I bought samsung bluray BD 6500. I played 300 movie today and I am getting black bars at top and bottom. I was having same issue with my old DVD player, I thought bluray would fix the issue Sad .

I tried to adjust aspect ratio to 16:9 wide, it didnt help. 16:9 normal didnt help too.

I called samsung 1800 number. They said it is the way bluray disk is behaving, other disks might work fine for you, we can't do much in this case.

Any one has the same issue and has any suggestion for me?

Samsung 40'' giving horizontal black bars at top and bottom

It depends on the movie's aspect ratio, most are 2.35:1 which is wider than your 16:9 TV, hence the black bars on the top and bottom. Some movies are converted to "Anamorphic Widescreen" which converts the original 2.35:1 ratio to 16:9 (by zooming some and clipping a little).

Movies (and therefore bluRays and DVDs) are filmed and transfered to disc, in different formats (height and width). Some happened to be the exact same format as your 16:9 TV screen. Others not. The ones that are taller than they are wide (such as older films) will show black bars on both sides. Some that are wider than the format (shape) of your TV screen will show black bars on the top and bottom. The movie "300" is one of these. This is normal. There are settings to make the movie fill the screen but the downside is that you will be losing some of the image on both sides. Other options are to stretch the image to fill your screen but you will then be stretching the image vertically. Some people don't care. Personally, I can't stand the distortion. I enjoy watching movies in their original "aspect ratio". I suggest you get used to it.
