Samsung 206BW mini DVI or VGA

Apr 15, 2007 12:12AM PDT

I am planning on buying the Samsung 206BW 20in widescreen monitor to go with my MB or MBP. I was looking at it and don't know if I need to buy the Mini DVI cable or VGA cable that will connent my notebook to the screen. Thanks

I guess it depends on

the type of connector on the monitor.

If the monitor has a DVI connector, buy that adapter,
If the monitor has VGA only, buy that connector.

DVI is better than VGA but go with what the monitor has.

Given the price of the adapters, I would be inclined to purchase them both and cover all my bases

Getting the adapters - plural - is a good idea

If you do presentations (or want to watch video or the iTunes visualzer on a bigger screen), you want to be able to connect to monitors or projectors other than your own monitor. Since you don't know what connections those other monitors or projectors will have (analog-RCA or S-video, xVGA, DVI), much more convenient to have them available rather than need them and not have them.

help with DVI/VGA
Apr 25, 2007 3:59AM PDT

I have a Macbook. it has a mini dvi connection.

i have a 19" samsung LCD.
this one: http://www.beyondtelevision.co.uk/productImgs/samsung-le19r71wx.jpg

it has a DVI input as well as a PC input, which is the same as VGA... right?
ok so

i bought a mini-dvi to dvi apple cable,
then i just needed a DVI to DVI extension, and i found one, but for 70 DOLLARS.

i hooked it all up, and it worked, but the picture was very bad.
i returned the 70 dollar dvi to dvi, because if its gonna give me that bad of quality, then its not worth it.
i'm thinking of buying a... mini dvi to vga.... then a vga to vga extension, because that one is only like $15.

but they also make DVI to VGA.

what should i do for the best picture quality on my samsung.

Not really an answer but,

doesn't the monitor come with a video cable attached to it or is it one of those that came with only a VGA cable and they left it to you to purchase the DVI one?

From what you are saying, it sounds like the monitor did not come with any video cable at all. Surely not?

The DVI/VGA adapter for your machine is a reasonable price. As I mentioned above, get both and you are covered.

Theoretically, the best quality picture should be with the DVI connection.

I have got a black macbook with an external 19 inch Asus monitor. It has both the vga and dvi inputs but i had only bought the mini-dvi to vga adaptor so I have been using it with the vga and quite frankly the picture quality is quite excellent. However I do plan to buy the dvi adaptor when I am next at an apple store just to see if it any better and so that I can free up the vga one for school.

DVI or mini DVI

The MacBook uses a miniDVI and the MacBook Pro will use DVI.

On what do you base your erroneous information?

Both the MacBook and MacBook Pro are fitted with Mini DVI ports to allow the connection of an external monitor.

The MacBook Pro has a Mini DVI to VGA adapter cable included, the MacBook does not.

As already stated in this post, Mini DVI to VGA and Mini DVI to DVI adapters are available for both machines.
