Samsung 1080p DLP - Latest scoop on availability

Jun 6, 2005 5:28AM PDT

Both J&R and Vann's indicate end of June delivery for the Samsung HL-R5688W, the 56 inch pedestal model. One source says that all of the TVs were recalled to the factory. Another source told me that Samsung is now testing every TV of this model before they leaves the factory. Apparently some problems were uncovered and there has been an effort to maintain quality control.

Does anyone else have some inside information?

The guy at Harvey Electronics' showroom in New York City told me that the 56" 1080p RPTV DLP was delayed until September.

Hmmmm, might such postings be the self-serving musings of a member of Mitsubishi, LG, or Toshiba marketing department? Orrrrr is this the real deal. Proof will be in the pudding.

Samsung 1080p Delays
Jun 26, 2005 11:28AM PDT

I checked my order with J&R (jr.com) in NYC on 6/22. As of that date, they said that the hl-r5688w was scheduled to ship the first week in July.

Vanns.com indicates early July shipping.

Continued delays, however, wouild not surprise me. Samsung's press release indicated a February 2005 release. Then I was told May, then first week of June, then end of June and now early July. Apparently the reason for the delays is that they were testing every single set before it left the factory instead of two from each run.

I hope this delay doesn't run into September. If it does, I might consider other options.

I'll keep you guys informed when I hear something new. EG

62" release date?

Any word on the 62" release of the 1080p?

HL-R6178W release date uncertain
Jun 27, 2005 12:43AM PDT

As far as I know, Samsung has a 61 inch 1080p on the way. Vanns, however, does not list a shipping date for this model. There is a tabletop 56 inch 1080p, the HL-R5678W, that is supposed to ship at the same time as the pedestal HL-R5688w ships.

It's official: From the horse's mouth ...
Jun 28, 2005 12:14PM PDT

I spoke with a knowledgeable Samsung rep today. The 1080p DLPs, specifically the pedestal HL-R5688W, have already begun arriving at some stores. However, the resellers may not display, sell or ship these TV's until there is an official announcement from Samsung expected the first or second week of July.

Now, how about the rep's answer re: the 61"/62" model and real street pricing on both?

Some Samsung 1080p's now available on West Coast
Jul 14, 2005 12:49PM PDT

HL-R**68w and 78w's have been sighted on the West Coast. TV Authority is currently shipping those models to those who pre-ordered early on. I am told that the 5688 pedestal is expected the week of 7/18 to 7/22.

The East Coast is running about 3 weeks behind the West Coast according to a local East Coast dealer who spoke with their Samsung rep.

Available, but wait...2nd guessing why I want 1080p.
Jul 15, 2005 12:26AM PDT

Yes, the Good Guys chain is getting theirs in too. Now hold on a second. I had this long discussion with their senior sales staff and they were wondering why I would want one now when there is no device on the market (and none for the foreseeable future that will be able to use the 1080p resolutions. Were they right or were they just trying to sell me the xdd2 to move them out of there supply chain?

Terrific Question
Jul 15, 2005 4:05AM PDT

It is true that there is nothing yet available that provides 1080p output EXCEPT VGA slide shows or other presentations from your computer using the TV as a PC monitor. Also, those broadcasts that are done in 1080i will be converted by the set to 1080p. The improvement would be similar to watching a standard 480i picture that is converted by an enhanced defintion television to 480p.

However, resolution isn't everything. I am still up in the air as to whether to buy the Samsung hl-r5688w pedestal DLP or the Samsung hp-r5072 plasma that is 768p. The DLPs have what I find an annoying screen graininess or sparkle that can be seen in brightly colored scenes, such as white walls and blue skies. This sandlike effect is produced by the lenticular nature of the screen. Samsung is addressing the problem with the introduction of the ''ultra fine pitch'' screens in the 2005 models, but I still find the graininess annoying and distracting on the new sets. The plasmas show no such problems and DVDs upconverted to 768p look fantastic.

OMG, DLP vs. Plasma....That's Not Even A Contest....
Jul 15, 2005 1:37PM PDT

...Plasma blows DLP out of the water. 1st round TKO here. Go 45 degrees off axis of any DLP you choose and tell me what you see. "Nothing" you say. Well, you;re right. Go off axis on a DLP and it looks like they turned the set off. Dead on it's not even close in color richness, gradation and detail.

Man, that's like a Pee Wee Herman vs. Tyson fight.
