Same Trouble

Jun 3, 2005 8:58AM PDT

Hey folks! Can you guys help a beginner here? I'm still having trouble removing, disabling,or finding the correct driver for this thing called a PCI Ethernet controller. Does my Compaq Presario 5441 Desktop PC, with a Dial-up Agere Win Modem on Windows 98 Second Edition OS, that i use for home&educational reasons, need this Ethernet?? What should i do? i did some research and followed suggesstions, but no luck. In closing, This "Found New Hardware" and "Add New Hardware", message appears every time when i restart my PC. This is annoying me after 3 weeks. Thanks,Peter for your suggestion. We have to try something else now. Bluewaters out!

A reinstall or upgrade of an OS....

can bring out those devices which are not recognized by that OS. You have to look at your install procedure.

1) Is this the original install disk for this computer?
2) Is the ethernet device original to the machine?
3) Have you checked the Compaq website for the software for this device?

In answer to your question:

"need this Ethernet??"

only if you are using the device to connect to a network. Elsewise you can choose to disable the device on it's Properties page.

Look on the back of the computer

for an opening that is identical to a modem plug-in but slightly larger....if it is all by itself with a possible green/red light on the silver plate, it is a separate card in a PCI slot. If it is next to or very near your USB connectors, it is "on-board" and built into the motherboard.

You can disable the LAN (same thing as an Ethernet or NIC...network interface card) in the bios if it's 'on-board'. You can disable either of these types in the Device Mgr by right clicking, choose Properties for the Networking Device, and Disable in All Hardware Profiles. You can also physically remove the extra card from the PCI slot if you want and have that type, but disabling it in Device Mgr is just as effective.

The device is only for connecting with cable/dsl type modems or to network two or more computers together so if you have none of those going on, disabling is the way to go.

Same Trouble

Toni,Michael, and forum guest,I followed your suggestions, but I'm new to computers at 47yrs. I started with the BIOS first and disabled LAN. Second,I went to Device Manager and got stuck there because, after check marking the "Disable Hardware" box on "Dial-up Adapters",under the + sign on"Network Adapters",I could not connect to my ISP or Internet.
Does anyone think I have overlooked something? Is there another device causing this message about a Ethernet, which i dont have???? In Device Manager, there is nothing listed as a PCI Ethernet controller, but yet, whenever i restart PC,I get a message box that says, "Windows has Found New Hardware-----PCI Ethernet controller". Next, another message box says," Add New Hardware-------Install driver for this Device-------Let Windows Search for device or You select from list------". I have tried ,but error messages come up stating,"Windows was unable to locate a updated driver, or if I chose from list, I get stuck on which one to chose, there everything from CDROM to Modem and 1394 Bus,Hard Disk Drive,Tape Detection,Network Adapters, etc,.None of these items point to a PCI Ethernet controller. My PC does not have a Ethernet,I only have this Dial-up Network Adapter. Step by Step, How do i disable Ethernet message box from apearing after restarting PC? Thanks 4 your past help. Mike. a.k.a,bluewaters

The dial up adapter is your modem

If there is no PCI Ethernet controller in Device Mgr it is because there is none installed yet.....so just disable the LAN in the bios and reboot. It should be OK after that.
