Samba and win7 work fail

Sep 22, 2009 6:29AM PDT

So I just installed Ubuntu Server Edition i386 on an old comp and my Win7 x64 (RC1) cannot edit/creat files that the Samba program hosts...XP can get in and edit/read and create/delet so I am a bit lost. But as Win7 is just RC that might be all there is to the problem.
When I try to edit I get a "acsess denied" msg. So I messed around in the ownership/acsess right panel to no avail (go figure as the "controling" acct is on a diff comp)
Is there another setting I need to change in smb.conf? or am I just f'd and reduced to using FreeNAS instead? The server was to host files for my computers so I didn't have to download updates 5million times (...exageration, but still a lot of times) and to netwrok a printer to the house (which is why I chose Ubuntu).

Workgroup names are all the same.
Win7 asks for a user/pass on first connect after boot...XP doesn't

Thank you for you time and help in advance.

Close but no Cigar

I have had the Win7/XP file sharing for quite some time. The printer is more of a problem .....it is an old Epson AP 4000 (Parallel interface) and I cannot network the printer from Win7 as Win7 doesn't have the driver for it and I cannot get it to work in the netwrok though WinXP (although I can get win98SE to network it just fine :/
I cannot find the drivers to get it to work over the network w/ winXP I put the XP install disc in and serch the web and disc and where ever else I can and come up with nothing.

I have the XP driver (ie the printer works in XP) but when i try to network it it ask for network divers...which I do not have and at which time it tells me that it cannot network the printer

Without Win 7 drivers. Likely to be a dead end.

If you could point to the maker's web site on the printer I'll look again.

While I've done the writing from 7 to Ubuntu server
Sep 22, 2009 10:02AM PDT

I had to use the link above to treat Windows 7 as if I was setting up Window 7 to connect to a XP share. Good luck!

As to Epson drivers, many makers are waiting till Windows 7 arrives. We're waiting.

So you mean to tell me you cannot offer any help?

And can you explain the "I had to use the link above to treat Windows 7 as if I was setting up Window 7 to connect to a XP share." a bit more. I think I do not understand it.

Either the link didnt come through or did you mean the geek howto?
And i want to set up UBUNTU not win7 as the share ie. have win7 and winXP and what ever other os's that grace my house save to copy from and print through.

It appears I can't help.

I offered the link above which I used to change Windows 7 to be able to use, connect to XP. Having done that, then and only then Ubuntu's server could be used. Sadly that is what I did and I've shared what I can. As to the printer, as there are no Windows 7 drivers and I won't write such then I'm failing to help you there as well.

My apologies. All I can do is share my experiences and what I've used to get this working.

Set up CUPS server on Ubuntu. Then win7 will connect to it and print.
