Sam's audio/video botique

Apr 1, 2006 1:48PM PST

Was in my local Sam's Club today and browsed the electronics. They had a whole island of HD TVs. LCDs, DLPs, a CRT, Plasmas and LCD panels. They had a 60" Panasonic DLP right next to a 60" Phillips CRT. The Panasonic was twice the price and just blew the Phillips away. Of course the Panasonic and everything else was on a high def feed and the Phillips was on stretched standard def. Think they want to sell that cheap set? Then I wander over to the audio section and there is a Bose Lifestyle system factory display at about 1500 dollars right next to the boom boxes and 300 dollar HTIBs with all the speakers stackd on top of the receiver. Another fair comparison. Bose probably paid them for shelf placement. At least I did not run into any Monster cables, just some very nice reasonably priced ones by Phillips.

Point is, before you buy at Sams or Costco or Best Buy or Circuit City. Do your homework before you try to make a comparison in the store-they are not always fair.

I think they were using the Linn boxes to hold up that Bose display. You should get one of those Bose systems--best sounding speakers thay had.

Yes, I know it's rather bad setup.

Many places, Sam's and FRY's, etc have the CRT HDTVs hooked up to an standard RF (analog) signal so they don't look as good. This was helpfull when I bought my CRT-RP, since I knew what I was watching, but if you don't know then you would think that the CRT isn't as good.
I look behind the set to see how it is hooked up. John

When I first looked at the Panny about a year and a half ago, it was at Costco. It and the other displays were hooked up with composite cables, older model DVD players and looked awful.

I went home and came back with my own DVD, movie and component cables to test out the display. As I had the Panny turned around and was hooking it up correctly and adjusting the settings, a supervisor came by and asked me what I was doing. I explained and she went and got one of the employees that worked in that area. I explainded that all these sets should be set up with component cables and DVD players with component outs. They saw the great improvement in the picture quality.

They thanked me and she said she would get things changed. Sure enough before the Christmas selling season they had all new DVD players and component cables.

We felt no twinge of hesitation when we returned my wife's 3 year old sewing machine that she did not like for a no questions asked refund.
