Sager versus Alienware?

Nov 17, 2009 12:24AM PST

I originally ordered an Alienware M17x to replace my aging Aurora M9700. The M17x had the following specs:

Intel Core2 Quad Q9000 2.0GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz 2 x 2048MB
17.0in, WUXGA,LCD,ANW,M17X
CrossFireX - Dual 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870
1TB (500GB x 2) 7,200RPM (xMB Cache) - RAID 0

Unfortunately, given my experience with Dell's order/customer service organization, that's not really an option any more <see The Dell Forum "Letter to Michael Dell on Purchasing a New M17x">.

Having said that, does anyone have any experience with Sager gaming laptops? I'm specifically looking at their NP9850 with the quad upgrade, more memory and a bigger hard drive. Thoughts?

Where you at?

My run in with Sager was over the years in the repair industry. The lack of parts was at the time unacceptable. Today you find that most makers do not stock the smaller spares. If a small board burns out that is attached to the display or the motherboard you can't buy that board but must replace the display or motherboard. My run in with Sager and the other small names was simply they had zero spares in the country.

Part of that had to do with taxes levied on stock in the warehouses but they had no service center either at the time. The lesson was that you wanted to avoid them.

Fast forward to today and why not try them again? Get their 3 or more year warranty.

Sager versus Alienware?

I'm in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, so not too far from Dell's Round Rock Headquarters.

Thank you for the thoughts and I had already included the cost of the three year warranty on both the M17x and the Sager NP9850 when I was doing the price/performance comparison. I had the same warranty on my Aurora M9700 and it was well worth the initial expense when things started going downhill.

I see you are well armed.

Ok, you know where the Dell centers are. Where are Sager's?

Now that Dell has had time to correct some of the Alienware blunders I don't have much to say other than get out there and tickle the keyboards and look over the machines. My money would be on Alienware today. But then again I went with the dv6=1360sb last month. Wish I could have found that model without the 3D GPU. It would have been perfect.
