F8 Key

On W98SE, turn computer on, and while it is booting in black/white screen, press the F8 key by itself, and then you will be provided Safe Mode option.

I do not know if this is the same process for W2000.

Fish, This Symantec Article Should Help

Starting your Win 2000 computer in Safe mode

Generally though, it's exactly as the others above have described. Shut down the computer, wait one minute, restart the computer, wait for the white "loading" bar at the bottom of the screen, then immediately start pressing the F8 key, once per second till a "selection screen" loads. Use the "up/down arrows" to select the "Safe Mode" option, then press the "Enter" key.

Hope this helps.
